Laptop system requiements compatible with Davinci Resolve?

PostThu May 31, 2018 2:00 pm

I facilitate an animation group and am looking to edit our film using Davinci Resolve as I have had some previous experience with it and have found it extremely user friendly. Unfortunately all existing p.c.s at the project run on Windows 32 bit. I have been offered a brand new laptop and due to requisition restrictions only one model is available. I googled Davinci Resolve system requirements and it appears to state that minimum storage space should be 512 gb. The internal storage for the laptop on offer is 500gb. Does this exclude this laptop from successfully running Davinci Resolve? The laptop in question is HP Elitebook 820 G3.

Many thanks in advance for any input.

Hi.

I try to Google the HP Elitebook 820 G3 and found out it is a Ultrabook with a low power CPU. It is far below recommendation for Resolve. And a wonder if it still run Windows 7. For Resolve only support Windows 10.

You write that 'Unfortunately all existing p.c.s at the project run on Windows 32 bit'. How is the possibility, to upgrade one to Windows 10 64 bit, that can't cost much.

Here is a link to DaVinci Resolve 15 Configuration Guide:

Many thanks Carsten for your reply

I forgot to mention in my original post that I'm not looking to acquire the full Davinci Resolve package but rather the free download so I'm hoping that this will require much less memory.

Nope, it needs the same hardware level, the capabilities in the free version are already quite demanding.

OK, since temporal denoting is not in the free version, you may get away with a somewhat lower GPU, but that machine is definitely too weak.

Try something like Hitfilm or Lightworks for your needs.

Good Day.

You've provided too few specs for immediate assistance, Good Man.

See the New Resolve v14 Configuration Guide pinned on the home screen of Blackmagic Design Forums, for details you need to decide.

The notebook specs should include its screen diameter as well as the other good stuff you left out.

I'm not convinced a laptop is ideal for Resolve. I think you're going to struggle with it under a lot of conditions.

You can technically use it if you have very light-duty files, but doing any kind of complex work will be tough. You can work to a point with low-res proxies and/or optimized media. Your money may be better spent buying a bigger (used) desktop machine with CPUs and GPUs that meet BMD's suggested config specs.

Many thanks for all your replies. Much appreciated!

As I stated, the reason I had everything crossed for this particular laptop is that it is all I'm being offered and hence why I'm trying to squeeze Davinci Resolve's system requirements to match this particular machine. As I said I had been using Davinci Resolve previously on another computer. If I'm honest I'm probably only using a fraction of what it is capable of as I started editing what will be a less than 10 minute animation on it with absolutely no work done to each frame apart from importing to edit together and with a max of about three audio tracks. I am using jpeg images from a Canon camera and rendering what I have done after editing. I could even render very small sections and stitch together in other software if this proves too system heavy. It is just that I really love Davinci Resolve and I can actually produce results with it, unlike other software which can prove more of a headache. That's pretty much it in terms of sophistication. I am hoping that this might make Davinci Resolve more workable on the HP Notebook offered (I don't have any more details on the spec sadly other than the model name). All media are stored on a usb stick. The p.c. I had access to previously which ran Davinci Resolve successfully for my needs was a Quiet PC Mamba Fanless Media PC.

Many thanks re:any input as to whether the HP Elitebook 820 G3 with 4G can somehow run Davinci Resolve bearing in mind my limited needs.

Hi.

The Quiet PC Mamba Fanless Media PC has a Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 motherboard. The fastest CPU for this is the Intel Core i7-5775C with a Average CPU Mark of 11013.
Intel Core i7-5775C has a builtin Intel HD Graphics 4600 with a OpenCL Benchmark of 14747.
With the possibility to use a separate Graphics Card.

The fastest HP Elitebook 820 G3 has a Intel Core i7-6600U with a Average CPU Mark of 4808.
Intel Core i7-6600U Intel HD Graphics 520 with OpenCL Benchmark of Intel 15353.
And there is NO WAY to use use a separate Graphics Card.

I don't know which version of Resolve you was using. But even if you use the same old version of Resolve can't I recommend the HP Elitebook 820 G3 .
The CPU Benchmark is under half of the The CPU Benchmark for the Quiet PC Mamba Fanless Media PC, 4808. vs 11013.. A Quiet PC Mamba Fanless Media PC or similar is much faster and better as you can add a separate Graphics Card.

Regards Carsten.
