There are lots of things you may not have set correctly or there could be a issue with your clip.
Lets start here, download and unzip this tone clip and see if it plays.
you should be able to see it in the media page viewer, see the meters on the media page, and hear it play.

Same when you play it on the timeline.
If not, check what you have selected for your speakers, is it system audio?
