Main NLE Feedback from a Premiere guy
Posted: Sun Jun 17, 2018 2:26 pmPremiere guy here. Since 15's release I have pushed myself to really put Resolve through its paces as my main NLE. My biggest pros are how much easier it is to work with footage in Resolve than Premiere. Hands down, it regularly takes Premiere to the whipping post in that regard. However, there are some key workflow issues that have stopped me from being able to leave the Adobe realm, and I thought I'd pass these on as I do greatly want to see Resolve's continued evolution.
1. I get better sync results when I use PluralEyes, but an XML exported from Resolve does not import properly into PluralEyes (I get an invalid media error), and Resolve can't connect media from an XML exported from PluralEyes. This means I have to use Premiere as a mediator between them to get the results I want, which eliminates the point of removing Premiere from the equation.
2. Compound clips and sequences do not show audio waveforms when previewing in the source monitor. It is very important for my workflow to make compound clips and subsequences, and when making my in and out selections for an insert, seeing the waveforms helps me move quicker as opposed to blindly scrubbing the frames. Always copying and pasting from one timeline to the next is a clunky way to go. Premiere's option to insert an un-nested selection from a sequence in the source monitor is greatly appreciated as well.
3. Premiere/After Effects' titles are presently much more intuitive.
4. Premiere's ability to connect to Facebook/YouTube/Vimeo accounts and do direct uploads is HUGE.
I have hope that Resolve will eventually become my main NLE, because I much prefer the "one-application-for-all" approach to post-house work. Editing no longer simply means cutting footage, in this day and age, editing is the entire process of post, for better or for worse. Just need to see some of these hurdles beaten.
For now, of course, Resolve remains my de facto color grading solution!
