hello forum,

i'm currently using a video editor i'm not happy with, and planning on moving to davinci resolve. i've read in the forums here that resolve makes heavy use of the graphics card for both both rendering and preview, so i'd like to know if the system i'm thinking of getting will be powerful enough to allow me to work w/o issues [i.e., no stuttering, no lag]. unfortunately, i have a pretty limited budget.

- ASUS Prime X470 Pro
- Ryzen 7-2700X
- 32gb G.Skill Sniper DDR4 RAM
- GTX 1050 Ti 4Gb
- WD 1Tb hard disk
- Samsung 850 Evo SSD

i'm esp curious about the graphics card. i'd love to get a 1080 Ti, but that's out of my price range. will the 1050 do the trick ?

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O and compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA Cores are better.

I don't know your format. Is it HD, Full HD or may be 4K. For 4K/UHD have 4 times the pixels of Full HD and require much stronger CPU and a GPU with much more CUDA/OpenCl performance and Video ram. But

I recommend to run Resolve om a motherboard with many PCIe lanes.
The ASUS Prime X470 Pro have only 20 lanes from the CPU and 8 (2.0) lanes from chipset.
We are all waiting for new AMD motherboards with Z490 which will have 4 more PCIe lanes.

The alternative will be Intel 6 Core i7 8700K CPU. Here are we also waiting for new motherboards with Z390 chips. Both the current Z370 and the comming Z390 will have 16 lanes from the CPU and 24 (3.0) lanes from chipset. That gives a total of 40 PCIe lanes.

If you want to use Resolve for 4K/UHD will you need to overclock the CPU and to cool the Intel 8700K by a water cooler. You can se a Youtube by Max Yuryev '$1350 8700K Video Editing BEAST! Premiere Pro & Davinci Resolve' and 'i7 8700k Step by Step Build Guide - Best 4K Video Editing PC'

ah, yes, sorry -- that would be important !
i work in hd 1080p. no 4k at the moment -- although who knows what the future holds ?

the gtx 1050 ti that i'm thinking of getting has 768 cuda cores and 4gb of ddr5 memory. i'll check in the guide you just referred me to, to see if that will be enough.

i'm reluctant to wait much longer ; i'm not sure when these new boards will be out, and new boards always have bugs in them, which will make waiting even longer [i almost never go with something 'brand new', i rather wait until it has been around for a while and is stable... ]

If you choose the Intel way, will I recommend to wait for the new Z390 Motherboards. The current Z370 was just a rename of the previus Z270 without any improvement. The new Z390 will for example bring all the USB port up to the current standards together with many other much needed updates.

If you choose the AMD way, will I say the current X470 has to few PCIe lanes.

In the beginning of my previous post did I write:

So I will say the number of CUDA cores is as important as the number of CPU cores.
All the image processing depend on the CUDA performance.
The compression and decompression of codecs depend on the CPU cores.

And the disk Input and Output can really be slowed down by to few PCIe lanes. All X470 motherboards have only 20 PCIe lanes and the connection to the Graphics card takes the 16. So the are only 4 left. The new AMD Z490 will double that with 4 more to a total of 8 free PCIe lanes for disk I/O. And a SSD with the fast NVMe interface uses 4 PCIe lanes.
So the Z490 motherboards is very much needed.
