Changing the color of the sky?

PostSat Jul 21, 2018 6:46 am

Hello everyone, I’m fairly new here. Im working on my first project and messing around, and getting to know Resolve. One thing I really wanna try is changing the sky color. An example could be the sky in the music video of either Icon by Jaden Smith or Audi by SmokePurpp. Not saying I listen to either, just reallylike how they do it and wonder how I could go about that myself.
Thanks in advance :)

It depends. Post a still of what you're starting with and what you want it to be.

Techniques can range anywhere from an overall color correction to a specifically-targeted color correction, or pulling a key off the sky and color correcting the key, or masking off the sky with Power Windows for the correction, or even down to VFX sky replacement. Some may not be practical for what you're trying to do, but often you can get at least in the ballpark with some work, some experience, plus trial & error.

There are some terrific tutorials out there that explain how to do things like this, but it's more of a process than one specific trick or technique. It's kind of a "how do I build a boat?" kind of question.

Ok, I saw the stuff you want to make :
.

Actually, I didn't watch long but since it doesn't move a lot, a couple of power windows would be enough (one to exclude what the sky is not part of and another to select it specifically), then... whatever may satisfy you (like Hue tweaks or color boost + offset etc...).
If the cam had regular sudden moves but keeping specific landmarks always in focus (like buildings or trees), you may need to track before, than use one of the more relevant technique.
Btw, sometimes, the more basic works great, therefore the "-100 strong trick" in the classic stabilizer which consists in replacing the sky (not only changing the color of the real one) and make it follow the moves of the cam to stick with the rest can resolve 80% of your needs. You'll probably find tons of tutorials for that ;)
