Does the Color page seriously not show clip names anywhere?

Maybe I'm just overlooking it, but...

I can't find the name of the currently-selected clip anywhere on the Color page.

Can you?

Wow, not only is that obscure as hell... but it's totally useless. The filename is truncated to a ridiculously small number of characters. Look at this nonsense:

So it looks like the answer is YEP: This page does not show the clips' names. Incredible.

Thanks, though!

That is a poor layout, but it might just be one click away if you really need the name when you’re on the Colour Page by toggling the Edit Page. Still it could be an issue that BMD will address if you request it.

Right-Clicking on the clip's thumbnail in the Color Page and choosing an option to View Clip Details will open a floating window that will show many details of the currently selected clip.

Seems like scaling bug or such

If you click around you get normal file name.
See my screenshot with r3d file.

Thanks for the replies.

My display is a 27" 5K iMac. That ought to do it, don't you think?

Also... the clip names should be shown on the screen somewhere at all times. Like above the viewer, where you'd expect the clip name to be. Hell, the names aren't even available as ToolTips (which is not an acceptable workaround, but still).

I get a tooltip when hovering over the name in the info tab.

Other options are clicking on the bit below the clip thumbnails until it shows clip names (still gets truncated but may be ok on higher res screens, or you can turn on the lightbox (same as disabling clip view on the main display if you have 2 monitors), click on the info button and click on the area below those clips until it shows clip name. You can then make the thumbnails larger if need be. Again depending on resolution and clip name length this may not show everything you need still. Or indeed you can use the floating clip details window.

I go by memory, under the clips thumbnails, there is the filetype. If you click there it should cycle between filetype, version number and clip name.

However, I pretty much always have the burnin on with source tc/frame, record tc/frame, clip name, and occasionally other info... small, in the lower portion of the screen.

Walters' memory serves him well. Double click on whatever is showing under any of the clip thumbnails on the colour page and voila! They all change to file name, file type, or nothing at all.

It’s actually clip name, type or grade version, and I’d there is only one grade version it’s blank.

Excellent to know

Is there a toggle for show/hide data burn-in (following on from Walter's suggestion)?

where you do the burning, save a preset and use the top right control to reset.
there is no "fast" way to toggle on/off

Thanks, Peter. Didn’t know that was clickable. It shows me about the first 20 characters of the Clip name which is perfect for my purposes.

Thanks for the replies.

The ineptitude of this design fits perfectly into the rest of Resolve's UI. Look at this:

Why lay this already-narrow window out in two columns? There's not even room for the name of the codec, let alone a file. At least put the longer items on their own rows.

Thanks for the info about clicking under the thumbnails. Unfortunately the option is useless in many cases because of the limited space. One potential way to make it useful would be to let us show the end of the filename, which is often a sequential number that may be enough to ID a file.

I do indeed get a ToolTip when hovering over the name in the info pane... merely emphasizing what a failure this layout is. The point is to show information; so why do we have to guess that we have to hover over a static text field then wait.... for yet another window to pop up showing us the information? ToolTips are not a valid solution to this problem because they're based on hovering and waiting... but if you're going to have them, why on earth not have them on the clip thumbnails?

Palmer, my clip names follow this naming convention:
Reel_MMDDHHMM_Cnnn
eg. P059_09161136_C008

I’m also on a iMac 27” and the clip name displays on the Colour and Deliver pages directly under the thumbnails. Until BMD reformats the panel you have illustrated (which seems to be a good idea), I can see my clip names adequately.

Can you share with us a typical clip name you use including the naming conventions and an example?

Sure, Rick. Thanks for your reply.

I use BlackMagic's own default format for filenames. If I remember correctly, it's the camera name followed by reel, timestamp, and take number(?). Which is very similar to yours. Like this:

GHS BMPC_1_2018-06-11_1114_C0015.mov

I shortened the camera name from "BlackMagic Production Camera" or whatever their default was, needless to say!

Well now I see your problem and you see why I’m not having a problem using only 18 digits. I use a much shorter convention which works because I only have one or two cameras

My first letter is the camera mount:
P is my URSA Mini 4.6K Camera with PL mount
B is my URSA Mini 4.6K Camera with B4 mount
M is my BMPCC4K mFT Camera (using my PL glass)

3 digits for my CFast 2 cards beginning 001 to 999

8 digits for the compressed date (and I store the reels in a folder for each year so no conflicts)

Cnnn for the clips.

This is how I like to work too. The data burn-in has a lot of useful options. The Data Burn menu can be assigned a keyboard shortcut for fast access.

There is a clip info dialogue too. Right click on thumb
