GMIC HaldCLUT's converted to .cube

PostThu Aug 09, 2018 1:39 am

Well, some people may have already done this, but as I couldn't find it anywhere I took some time out of my free time and converted all of the 363 to .cube using LUT-Convert Python script https://github.com/mikeboers/LUT-Convert
Here is the link to the 2.4GiB folder
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1cBaI31TaZgj6Z7abReTEHIJPVtLqY4Dg
If by any means you appreciate it and feel your life was made in any way easier or happy, don't hesitate to send me anything you deem worthy through Paypal at gordoviajao@yahoo.com.br (well, I'm between jobs and could always use some gratitude :D )
I'm also open to comments, suggestions and doubts. I may not be able to answer everything, as I just converted them, I'm not the original author of them for GMIC.

Hey, i use those LUTS long time ago and they are the best looking LUTs ever. And free. But i converted them with IWLTBAP LUT Generator. Those LUTS are technically well made and usable in LOG and wide gamut. Colors are slightly different in wide gamut but no any wired posterization or banding compare to many other LUTs.

P.S. I can also suggest to download and convert to cube LUT pack from RawTherapy app. It seems that pack based on similar source but uses more complicated contrast curves and higher resolution.

P.P.S. I also found that different software may convert HaldCLUT to cube in slightly different way. I'll be happy to check yours conversions and compare.

Thanks! Please, do compare them! I'm curious to see what people think of it and if this was worth the time I spent on it :D :D :D :D

I've used some of Pat David's film emulations at times past. Downloaded the HaldCLUT.png files directly from the G'MIC webpage:

https://gmic.eu/film_emulation/negative_new_sample_1.shtml#browse

Just a matter of clicking on the selected thumbnail image to get the download for the respective HaldCLUT.png file.

Like Dmitry, I used IWLTBAP_LUT_Generator for converting to CUBE LUT's

https://sellfy.com/p/aQ1y/

Nothing complicated. Simple one-click conversion.

Just compared some of 'so-converted' LUT's that I kept on file with the equivalent LUT's from Fernando's download pack and they produced identical scope profiles (with some test HD-AVC clips) in Resolve 15.

Edit:

Did that: downloaded the Raw Therapy pack and converted some of the HaldCLUT files to CUBE LUT's in like manner with the IWLTBAP-LUT generator. Testing in Resolve and comparing the profiles obtained with the equivalent LUT's from Fernando's pack (and mine) it is clear that the original have been 'modified' somewhat - generally higher contrast.

Also, as you noted Dmitry, the Raw Therapy HaldCLUT png's are higher resolution (1728 x 1728) than the 'original' G'MIC files (512 x 512) and the IWLTBAP-converted CUBE LUT files are way larger (79.7 MB vs 7.0 MB).

Beyond that, I can't really comment having never used Raw Therapy and knowing next to nothing about the complexities of 3D LUT's.

Edit: According to the ReadMe.txt in the RawTherapee (not Raw Therapy  ) pack, the HaldCLUT.pngs are Image Level 12, sRGB, 8bits/channel. As I learn, the 'Image Level' is the cube root of the resolution and equals the number of columns. Which makes the 'original' G'MIC (512) images, Level 8:

http://www.quelsolaar.com/technology/clut.html
http://rawpedia.rawtherapee.com/Film_Simulation

In theory, the higher the Image Level, the greater the precision, but if the RawTherapee HaldCLUT's were (as assumed) derived from the originals, with some modifications along the way, I can't see that would make the transforms any more precise.

Thanks for confirming that, your input is much appreciated and now we know Rawtherapee handles that in a different way. That's interesting news!

For example Velviia100 LUT extracted from GMIC pack vs extracted from Rawtherapee pack:

Yeah, the Rawtherapee one really introduces some extra contrast into the mix

I noticed that G'MIC updated Color Presets and Simulate Film Filters Collection at 2019-10-19. Seems they fix a lot of color banding and gamma clipping in many LUTs. But those LUTs are still different from RawTherapee.

RawTherapee Film Simulation Collection last version is still 2015-09-20

I am thinking to release large unified G'MIC and RawTherapee pack of x33 and x65 sized .cube LUTs.

Here it is! G'MIC and RawTherapee Film Simulation LUTs converted to .cube format by RADIOPROEKTOR on 2019-11-14.
Awesome LUTs made by talented people based on real film stocks. A lot of known free and commercial products are based on those HaldCLUTs sources. G'MIC and RawTherapee LUTs have some common roots but they are definitely not exact the same.

G'MIC Color Presets and Simulate Film Filters Collection 2019-10-19.
Package includes 296 Film LUTs and 159 Creative LUTs.
https://gmic.eu/color_presets/
Converted from x64 HaldCLUT sources to x33 and x64 sized .cube format. G'MIC LUT files where renamed, numbered and sorted in correct order to match RawTherapee LUT files naming logic. Numbered the files so they are sorted in the correct order when pushed or pulled (--, -, normal, +, ++).

RawTherapee Film Simulation Collection 2015-09-20.
Package includes 259 Film LUTs and 33 Creative LUTs.
http://rawpedia.rawtherapee.com/Film_Simulation
Converted from x144 HaldCLUT sources to x33 and x65 sized .cube format.

It took me a lot of time and effort to organize and transform these HaldCLUTs into .cube format, to made them compatible with DaVinci Resolve and other editing apps. I ask only $10 for this user friendly pack, but if you want to donate more - just add to cart two or more item copies.

Hey Dmitry, I got the HaldCLUT from the links you provided before but I think your new conversion is much better. I'll going to donate and download it when I get back tomorrow.

Is this a reasonable workflow for BRAW and being able to use the film out?
Node 1 = BRAW tab (Exposure)
Node 2 = ColorSpace Transform (Input colorspace/gamma: timeline/timeline; Output CS/Gamma: Arri/C-LOG
Node 3 to N = Primary grades (L-G-G, Contrast, Sat)
Node N+1 = GMIC Film LUT

Thoughts?

Some additional answers for frequently asked questions:

(+) and (-) in LUT names is amount of under and overexposed stops of original film source. Film stock produce interesting color and contrast shifts when under and over exposed. So LUTs with (+) and (-) where just taken from under and overexposed film sources. You can see some nice examples of real film exposure variations in this blog posts:
