I am working with DaVinci Resolve on a project. I saved the project and now when I try to open it, it crashes Resolve 100% of the time.

The culprit is the fact that I imported an audio file of edited interviews. First, I imported my footage, a series of interviews, and arranged them in the sequence I wanted. Then I exported the audio to work with in a DAW (Fairlight is too unstable to use). When I edited the audio, I then imported it and saved it. Generally, importing any additional information (like footage or music) later into a project causes complications in Resolve such as no longer being able to save the project. However, this time I was able to save it after importing the updated audio file, but now I can no longer open the project. Rather than redo the entire project in another editor, is there a way to open and resume my work?

Do u have the live save and backup versions on?

Hi Peter,

Sorry for not being more clear.

My project is saved. When I saved the project, I then closed the program. The program did not crash when I saved it. Rather, it crashes when I open the saved project.

Peter was probably asking about backup versions because there may be a backup that will load properly.

It also helps people to offer advise if they know the specs of your system, which is spelled out in the link Peter gave.

As to your actual problem, I've done similar things and not had any problems. Not much help, I know, but that's why knowing what your system is may help.

I have saved this project and it crashes when I try to open it. I have other projects that do open. I have looked up my issue on the forum and read the post that Peter Chamberlain made. So what I get is that daVinci Resolve needs to be backed up because it is not a stable program for edits. Generally, back-ups are required for possible hardware failures, but with Resolve, the user seems to be playing a game of Russian Roulette here hitting 'save' may or may not actually save the project. Hence to keep backing up the program and look for some earlier iteration that may have survived. Other users, even long time advanced ones, seem to be walking on eggshells with this program. Resolve is including a lot of features in their program, but not addressing stability. Hitting 'save' needs to mean something.

So the answer from Peter, the technician is, 'look for a back-up because your project is a goner.'

'Save' should be that back up. Saving under different names should help, but that save, when I open project manager and see the clips 'RIGHT THERE' but when I click the project I get 'DaVinci Resolve has stopped working.'

I have a powerful machine with lots of RAM, ssd drives, a pretty bad-ass GPU and a monster CPU with lots of cores that snacks on video edits like it's nothing.

So come on guys, pause the Fairlight, Fusion and whathaveyou and just get the program to work reliably.

Um.... in the 4 months or so that I've been using Resolve heavily, it has only crashed on me once and the project involved loaded-right back up again when I restarted the program.

Compared to my previous NLE, Resolve is fantastically reliable so perhaps your problems are either bad luck, cosmic rays or something else

What happens if you right click on the project in the project manager and export? Does that work? If yes, can you PM it to me?

I use professional PCB design software that cost me nearly 10 times what Resolve Studio cost me.

I use the auto backup system it has that lured me into a false sense of security until one day it crashed during a save and wiped out 3 days work. Not only was the main file corrupted, but so were all the recent backups.

I sent the files to the software developer, but they couldn't recover it. It took me nearly 2 days to get back to where I was.

So it can happen to anyone with any software.

The lesson I learned was to make my own manual backups of any critical work at intervals that I am willing to live with if I have a catastrophic failure. With the PCB design software, that's twice a day. With Resolve it's about every 10 hours or work.

What you describe sounds like a hardware failure to me and certainly back ups are the way to go for those. From my end, when I hit 'save', I need to feel good that I will be able to access my project again. Resolve also crashes during production, like sometimes when I toggle between modes, like Fairlight. But I know that even after crashes, when I fire up Resolve, I will be able to access the last saved iteration. Generally, I felt good about that, at least.

Here is where the trouble occurs; when I import my clips and start editing, things are fine. However, say I export audio to work with on a DAW and then re-import to Resolve, that almost always guarantees a crash unless I rename the whole project. Say during the project I see some footage that needs to be re-shot and imported, that too will cause a crash. Unless, I name it something else.

In this case, I reworked the audio and imported it and hit save and it 'took', or so I thought. I tried to rename it but it crashes 100%. This was a 24 bit wav file. I then tried to remove the wav file so it can open without it, but it still refuses to open. I am convinced that the importing of assets mid way through a project somehow causes an issue.

Right now, I have yet to encounter anything as surpassing as Resolve for color grades. I am addicted to it and think about it constantly. It is a marvelous piece of software. Verging on magic. It is the loss of the odd project that unnerves me. Crashes, okay, Fine, but give me my project back. When I lose a project, then we have a Hal and David situation.
