Huge Color Correct problem (Timeline Black / empty frame)

PostMon Aug 20, 2018 7:19 pm

YIKES

using v15 GM

this is huge --- for me at least
but it would apply to any one doing composites
masking and the like
or multi screen work as I am

If you color correct a CLIP (in "clip" mode not "timeline" mode)

the black background is affected by the top most color correct

this should not be!

my feeling is
the black empty / no footage / no generator should stay black as defined by the settings (e.g. 0 or 7.5 ire or project LUT defined)

below are two screen grabs
the first is slightly color corrected and the black looks "good" (but is not)
the second is this just the blue channel pushed to the extreme as to be seen

the only thing changed is the blue offset

I believe strongly that empty frame should be "system prefs / project prefs" black

If I have a empty void the black should reflect that NOT the current color correct meant for ONE CLIP

again to try to be clear the clip should not define the background base color of the timeline
or said differently -- the non presence of footage should always stay "black"

color correct perclip should stay per clip and not affect some overlaying portion of the timeline

sorry to sound panicy
but this to me seems huge

it means any Black (void of clip) in my timeline is not the same because of an overlying color correct in footage

and there seems to be NO WAY TO FIX IT

any help or tips would be appreciated
perhaps I'm misunderstanding something very very basic

hi yall

ok it's bad but it's only in some of the colorcorrect . --> it seems to be only a problem with

In PRIMARIES WHEELS

LIFT and OFFSET

in PRIMARIES BARS

LIFT and OFFSET

in LOG

SHADOW and OFFSET

so there seems to be a logic at work

but it stills feels wrong (imho) that there is a color corrector working where there is no image
when "clip" node based color correction is being done

it would mean any clip on the base level timeline is affecting the the non image part of the timeline for these controls e.g. background black/alpha

so if composting in the timeline
or you have any timeline black

Shadow and Offset
or LIft and Offset

are not useable for color correct

if you have a area of your canvas that that has no footage / media

hummm

Hello, Wolfgang,
in Resolve 15 you can connect the key input of the first node to the Source Input. You might need to change the Input Invert mode in the Key Palette.

THanks Dmitry

thats is a good (& great for the future) work around

but do you agree that is kinda crazy?
I believe most editors would think that "black" (null image - no media ) is black and unalterable??
(also in this case expected to be 100% alpha)

my problem is now I have to go back through two years of work and potentially re-master
if my client asks for it
because my blacks are not true
(maybe they didn't notice it - but nor did I.... but....still it's a mistake.)

so I like this work around
and it makes sense to me
I'm using the material as its own mask -yay

but then my question why is this not THE DEFAULT for the system?
in what case would an editor expect to that the source material didn't mask its self?

as it stands I would have to do this work around for EVERY piece of media In my timeline
(past and now in the future)
for me to expect a consistent management or compositing of media (in the edit timeline)

I understand that color correction is often single track (it is my bread and butter)
but in editorial adding a media object - that does not fit canvas - on top of nothing - it really should not affect the canvas
logos, images, iphone portrait formatted source etc etc
if I add say a logo and then color correct it
my background footage is also corrected in the same way as the logo - NOT per clip as expected

I would suggest that the norm would be your work around
not the exception

Further (and this is a long standing bug I have tried to report about before)
if I add a _third_ layer it works as expected
and the media -self- mattes
(so not an expected predicted result)

or to ask in another way
why in resolve is the matting of new media (not full canvas filling) different in tracks one or two then in track three or more??

I would like to drag media into the timeline and expect it would perform/function in the same way
no matter what track I work on - or have dropped media on to
in my (normalish) use case it means I would have to adjust every media file per your work around

that kinda seems crazy

I really hope you understand why I'm so freaked out
and I really appreciate the work around (it fixes everything)

but there's some very very base expectation here that can cause all sorts of dumb problems
like
"My blacks are not consistent"
or
"My output seems to not have the correct gamma no matter what LUT I apply"
(and they are only looking at the first part of the timeline)

thanks for your time and your very quick response

Another workaround:

Move required clips to video track 2 and add a black colour generator to video track 1.

Peter-
for sure this was my old work around
for materials not filling the canvas
!

but now (( or since when did the blacks get start to get affected v12 v14??>15 b3 b6 ))
the color correct is effecting the NULL base black ofthe timeline

major bad to be affecting the underlying NOT GENERATORed background...

e..g.. Peter have you ever color corrected a single clip with exposed background ((on black (no image))?
if you have you_ have _ the color corrected the black you thought was black for always... was not...

thanks for your time
ok sorry all
I'm going to sleep now
