Ok so silly question, asking for a friend, because surely I wouldn't do something so basic as this!

Let's pretend you are shooting an interview and the talent have lav mics, and you record to a multitrack audio recording.

You go through a week of editing and grading, and finally when you watch the rough cut, you notice one of the talents seems to be talking really, really quietly.

You use Fairlight to raise the volume by 6db, and it doesn't seem to work!

After scratching your head for an hour, you take a closer look: You pulled in the audio from one of the talents twice, so these 2 particular audio tracks are from the same source -- the same lav mic! The 'quieter talent's' voice you've been hearing is just bleed from talent 2's voice into talent 1's lav mic!

I read Chapter 34 of the manual about relinking media, conforming, etc. but am not sure how to proceed.

I'd like to swap out the audio on a specific audio track with a different source file, but KEEP the edits (cuts, minor EQ) that I've already made.

Since all 3 of the talents had lav mics and were recorded to a multitrack recorder, I have individual audio files for the entire interview (30 minutes). I've edited the interview down to 10 minutes, and that required a lot of cuts and edits in the audio.

If I can't figure out some semi-automatic way to do it, it's going to be a daunting task to edit the proper audio track. I made a lot of cuts, rearranged the order of things to tell the story better... Oh man, I am NOT looking forward to this!

Someone, save me with an 'automated' way of doing this!

Hey maybe my OP was too long.

Basically, I took an audio track of an interview and made a lot of edits (cuts, rearranging the order to better tell the story in the right order).

I thought I had linked 3 audio tracks, from 3 lav mics, and edited them all at the same time so they lined up perfectly.

Somehow, I duplicated the source file for Audio track 2, actually using the file from track 1. (So the source media for track 1 and track 2 are the same.) Obviously I need to bring in a different audio file to track 2, but with the exact same cuts and edits as I already made for track 1.

Is there a semi-automatic way to apply all the cuts and edits from audio track 1 to the unedited media for a different audio track?

Are the TCs the same, can you force conform the new audio track?

First of all, to effect a seamless replacement of one lav file with another, all 3 lav files have to be in sync and identical in length. If that's true, you still have a problem because if you simply relink the lav1 file to the lav2 file, you'll replace good audio lav1 audio with bad lav2 for the *other* speaker.

If your audio edit is final and you don't need access to the original lav2 file any longer for editing, try this:

1) copy the project.

2) open the new copied project, right click "lav1" and relink it to "lav2". Now, you should have good audio for the portion which was bad in the original project (and bad audio where it was formerly good).

3) export the good audio, then import it into the original project and put it into the timeline, replacing the clips of the bad lav1 audio for the second speaker.

You *might* be able to copy the portion of the timeline with the good audio from the copied project into the original project, but there will be a file name conflict with the source media file -- two "lav1" files, one of which is linked to lav2 -- when you paste the clips into the original project's timeline. I don't know how the system would handle that. Might be worth trying.

Thanks. I was looking into 'conforming' yesterday (Despite my novice questions, I DO try to figure this out myself before asking the community for help!)

I'll go to Youtube and the Resolve manual to see how this could be done.

Ugh. This made sense in my head (after reading it 3 times), but I couldn't get it to work.


The original audio files are one long file, no cuts, breaks, stops, edits, etc. When I try this (or at least what I THINK you meant to do), I basically pull in the original audio file from the correct lav mic, but the full length file, without any edits or cuts.

Without knowing Resolve Studio like an expert, I'm afraid I'm going to have to take the original audio for the lav mic/track in question, and make edits to it individually, and just very painstakingly and manually get it to match the other 2 audio tracks from the other two lav mics.

... I'd put a bounty on this, because I'm seriously not looking forward to editing the raw audio again, especially since it has to be cut and rearranged to match the other two lav mics.

When you take the crucial step of linking lav1 to lav2 in the copied project, you need to right-click the lav1 clip in the media pool, select "replace selected clip", then navigate to the disk where lav2 resides, and select it. Once that's done, the clips should be replaced on a 1:1 basis in the timeline, cuts, adjustment and all, if all prior conditions (already set out) were met.

Thanks. I believe I understand now, just one thing: I don't see Replace Selected Clip, I only see Relink Selected Clips. And then when I click that, and browse to the lav mic folder on my disk, Resolve only lets me browse to the FOLDER, and not browse all the way down to specific files.

I will try to attach a screenshot of what I see when I right click on the lav1 clip in the media pool. This is what I see as I right click; I don't see "replace selected clip". The closest thing I see is "Relink Selected Clips".




Also, I really appreciate your help and your time. People helping others on the Internet, for free, is such a nice thing to do. Thank you, honestly.

"Replace Selected Clip" is a v15 feature. You'll need to upgrade from 14(?) to see it. There are workarounds for accomplishing the same with relink features in 14, using the OS to create folders, rename clips, etc. but that's an added complication, for a process which may fail in any case. What should work and what does work aren't always the same.

Ohhh.. Resolve 15!

I heard that if I upgrade to v15, some settings, edits or changes to a project started in v14 won't work? (I may have misunderstood this part)
