DJI’s new Mavic 2 Pro

I shoot mainly outdoor action cams (GoPro) in UHD 8 bit.
DJI has just released the Mavic 2 Pro.
New Hasselblad camera with a 1" CMOS sensor claims "Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology"
It also records Dlog-M 10bit, and supports HDR video (HLG 10bit) using HEVC/H.265.
10bit is new to me and I've read strange things like HDR "needs no colour adjustment" :?:
Would Dlog-M or HLG produce better quality for editing?
Output will be 4k/UHD and I want the option of HDR for UHD HDR TV and later for the web.
Any advice appreciated including recommended Resolve 15 workflow.

More drone info here ($1449)

Thanks

HLG as HDR signal meant to be "final" data, like Rec.709 for SDR, so you can do only small adjustments to actual HDR signal like you do with Rec.709 for SDR.
Things are bit different when you try to use HLG as a source for further/heavier grading, but for SDR master. In this case it holds desired 10bit data and there are reports it's actually easier to work with than eg. S-LOG. It may end up that this is actually good source (eg. S-LOG replacement) for final SDR master creation. In the same time it's "ready" HDR master as well, which you can still slightly adjust. I would say try :)
I'm not sure how Resolve adjustments react to HLG (as it's hybrid gamma), but at the end you should be able to get where you want (maybe just need to dial something less or more).

I think the best option would be to go over ACES (to get HLG from hybrid gamma back into linear light), but this is not supported in Resolve yet.
When you do color managed project make sure input gamma is set to HLG (manually if needed), so it gets "normalised", so Resolve adjustments respond in "normal" way. I'm not an expert in this.

I have similar concerns regarding if Resolve full studio will be able to decode the H.265 10 bit log format that this new drone claims to create. Grading 8 bit is no fun and breaks down fast.

I presently cannot decode using Resolve 14 the Phantom 4 Pro's H.265 file format. I would like to avoid transcoding source material.

If someone could get me a sample file from the drone I would test Resolves ability to read it natively.

The 10 bit capability of this new drone is promising for us low budget operations.

10bit h265 should work in studio, no?

File one is actually a link to buy the drone, but files 2, 3 and 4 are real files.

Yes, the Mavic 2 pro h.265 footage imports into Resolve Studio 15 fine for me.

The Mavic 2 Pro has certainly grabbed my attention. My Mavic 1 is what I take with me simply because it's impractical to carry anything larger, even my Phantom 4 Pro, so the new camera specs look quite promising.

FYI.. according to the web links text..those sample files from Toms are H.264 files..not H.265

My bad.. my memory has failed me.. getting old here I suppose...
I recall now why I do not record H.265 from my Phantom 4 Pro drone.. the P4P's implementation of H.265 supports 4K or UHD at 29.97 fps. Not at 60 fps. I like to record 4K at 60fps as its just my thing.. and the P4P's H.265 does not allow 60fps.

Does anyone know if this is the same is true or not for the new Mavic 2? Specifically if the Mavic 2 Pro's HEVC 10 bit recording format also supports 4K at a frame rate higher than 30fps?

The Mavic 2 doesn't do anything faster then 30fps at UHD, unfortunately;

Oooh! Can't tell you how happy that makes me! Just received Mavic 2 Pro yesterday and got concerned when i figured out 10 bit MLog only recorded in h.265. Was aware that earlier Resolve bass some issues with h.265. Thanks for the info!

Can DaVinci Resolve 15 free import h.265 files or does something have to be added/changed to get it to work? I'm trying to import h.465 files from my Mavic 2 Pro and I keep getting an error, something about the processing GPU image and error code 11. I'm using a GTX1070 GPU.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello- new member here and appreciate your patience with a newbie question on capability of free version of Resolve 15 vs. Studio version on this subject.

Like the OP, I am messing with DLOG-M files from the Mavic 2 that are 10 bit H.265. I have the free version and what I notice is that I can import my DLOG-M H.265 10 bit files just fine, I can edit them, but they all end up rendering at 8 bit and H.264. I've tried rendering as "Custom" and at "H.262", MP4, QuickTime but all with the same result. At my novice level, I'm either not able to select the correct options to get them out at 10 bit (is that something that is even relevant?- the fact that it accepted them at 10 bit, does that indicate they processed at their full capacity?)- or there's a limit in what the free version can do.

I'm very happy to purchase the Studio version, but I want to make sure that it's a differentiated capability that I'm missing out on before I do.

According to this document the free version of Resolve does not support HEVC decoding.

As far as I can tell, Resolve Studio doesn't export H.265 at all. This document says Resolve does not support exporting of H.265. However, it also says only Mac supports importing of H.265 and yet I can import H.265 on my Windows machines just fine.

I've tried rendering as "Custom" and at "H.262", MP4, QuickTime but all with the same result.

I can't see a "Custom" option at all, and I just checked every export format and none of them list H.265.

I can export H.265 too in Studio on my Mac.

Will there be an IDT-option in ACES for DJI dlog-m?
