Scopebox on PC/Mac setup

PostSun Aug 26, 2018 10:03 pm

Hi all,

I’d like to start using Scopebox with Resolve, but have a few connection-related questions.

I’ve recently made the switch from a 2014 nMP (8 core, 32GB Ram, dual D700s), to a custom built PC (14 core i9, 128GB Ram, dual 1080ti).

So, now I find myself with a nMP that I use only for Prores exports, and I’d like to utilize it for Scopebox as well.

The new PC also has a Gigabyte motherboard with 2 TB3 ports. One port is already connected to my RAID. Other is free.

The PC uses a Decklink Mini Monitor card with SDI going to my FSI Monitor (Input #1)

I have my old Mac still connected to my FSI monitor as well (Input #2) via an UltraStudio Mini Monitor, and would like to preserve that SDI connection if possible.

Like I said, I’m not very familiar with Scopebox’s requirements, and I’m not sure how to hook it all up.

Here are my questions:

1) Are SDI connections required for both machines? Or would HDMI out from my PC’s GPU suffice? If so, how would I get that signal into Scopebox on the Mac?

2) Would it be possible to just use a TB3 to TB2 converter (Apple makes one), and simply go TB3 from my PC to TB2 on the Mac? Or, will an UltraStudio Mini Recorder be required?

3) Do I need an SDI monitor?

4) Basically, What is the best way to make the required connections in this scenario?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You need a capture device for the Mac. Anything that works with Mac is supported by Scopebox. BM Ultrastudio works with SDI and HDMI. SDI is preferrable for long cable runs. A good idea would be to connect a BM SDI to HDMI 6G converter to the decklink output. Loop through the SDI to your monitor and connect the capture device with short HDMI cable. This way you are compatible with 4k monitoring - the 6G converter can downscale to HD for scopebox - and you can use SDI for long cable runs.

You do need to use the Decklink output for scopebox, using display card HDMI is just sending you the desktop- not usable for monitoring Resolve.

Thanks, George,

So, it's looking like I'll need 2 new I/O devices (Mini Monitor and Mini Recorder), a TB3 to TB2 converter, and of course, Scopebox. Around $450 in all. Hmmm.

Now the question is, can I make Resolve see and output to 2 I/O devices simultaneously?

Another question.

I just realized that my FSI CM240 monitor has a 3GBPS SDI out. Couldn't I run an SDI cable from that output to a BMD Mini Recorder on my Mac? Thereby saving me the $145 cost of a BMD Mini Monitor?

Actually I meant getting this: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... /W-CONM-26
It is a converter that loops into the SDI cable to your monitor and downscales UHD to HD.
So its not an extra device.
IF your FSI monitor has an SDI output than you don't need that.
