Independent Timeline Resolution

Hello,
nowadays many of the content we deliver has to be rendered in several ratios.
For example web content will require a 16:9 version, a 9:16 vertical vertical, and a 1:1 square version, with each one requiring pan&scan.
Unfortunately Resolve only lets you set the resolution for the whole project.
Why not allow the user to set the resolution for each timeline ?
Is this on BMD roadmap ?
That would allow us to work and render a lot quicker : we'll be able to frame the content according to the output ratio, and we'll be able to batch render several resolution without changing setting between each render.

I agree! One of the main things I miss from Adobe. In this social media world, you have to be able to deliver in different formats quickly.

Just do it via Fusion page.

One workaround would be to duplicate the project, change the timeline settings as required, and queue it into the Render queue. Then pop back over into the other project with Dynamic Project Switching enabled, and in the render queue, select “Show all projects.”
This way, you can actually render different projects with different timeline settings from different projects in the same database.

There are obviously exist many ways how export timelines with different frame rate and resolution but editors sometimes needs to work inside the one project with different timelines resolutions and frame rates.
The only one correct way how achieve this is to split timeline settings and project setting to two separately settings.
I know this is different phylosophy than DaVinci has but DaVinci now isn't color grading software only.

That's one correct workaround, but it involves quite a lot of manual manipulations : time consuming and prone to error (especially with versioning and last minute changes).

In Premiere I usually have my "parent" timeline (1920*1080), that I throw and chop in new timelines (like a big compound clip). I then pan&scan in these children timelines.
That way I can do quick changes in my master timeline (colors, effects, titles, even replacing a shot) and everything is rippled dynamically to the other formats.
That's what I need in Resolve !

I also miss the ability to use different Timeline settings in the same project. It's more convenient than creating different projects.

Agreed. Creating multiple projects isn't an elegant solution at all.

+1. The color management, resolution and frame rate should fall within the domain of timeline, not the project.

You can set different custom “Output Scaling” from projects settings.
1. duplicate master timeline & rename to include aspect ratio/Resolution
2. Change “Output Scaling” to desired resolution/aspect ratio from Project Settings
3. Reframe clips in new timeline
4. Send to render queue
5. Repeat for all other aspect ratio/resolutions needed for project delivery
6. Start Render Queue
Feature Requests -
1. Save Custom Output Scale Presets
2. Ability to assign a “Custom Output Preset” to individual sequences inside medial pool by right-clicking on sequence and choosing from a set of presets from a dropdown list.
—- once assigned to a sequence, Resolve should automatically update Project Settings and allow the sequence to display at the intended Output Resolution/Aspect Ratio.

I agree. I used to use Premiere, but have been away from video for several years.
Adobe no longer offers a video package (and I dislike their subscription model anyway) so I looked at what else was available. Resolve was getting good reviews so I decided to get it and Fusion.
But there are several features of Adobe I really miss, and Premiere's timeline flexibility is one of those.

Answer = Conform to Resolve timeline settings occurs after Fusion Page
You can also drag clips that are have different attributes from media browser to Fusion page node graph to process in native space-time format of clip

Needing this feature for a project I am delivering right now. Meanwhile, I'm doing exactly as Michael has suggested here.

It's a real everyday annoyance

another +1 x 2;
- parent - child timelines
- color managment/ raster / frame rate in domain of the timeline

I am new to Resolve, trying to switch from PP. I was able to find many workarounds (still many left like switching clips via ALT/OPTION key) but this is really annoying. I hope BM will listen. So +1.

UP again, this is the bane of my existence.
Currently working on a multi-platform project.
I have 16 timelines with compositing and compound clips, each of them to be rendered in 5 differents formats.
BMD team, are you working on this or what ?

Similar with the framerate issue.
Some work was accidentally done on a timeline that was 29.97 but the project is meant to be 23.976. No way to transfer the work over, so now we've been jumping back and forth between the two different projects and it has become a complete mess. Gigantic headache.

There is a way to do it, but basically, that's a trainwreck. My advice would be to export a reference movie with visible source clip names and timecode numbers and pay an assistant editor to reconform it by hand. I've done it myself -- it just takes time. Even if there's 1000 total shots in the project, if it takes 1 minute of work per shot, it's only about 17 hours. That's not a back-breaking amount of work -- I've seen much bigger post disasters than that.
There might be a way to recompute the correct timecodes with modified EDLs in the database, but that's a bit above my pay grade. The 23.98 source timecodes would not change, so it'd just be a question of converting the 29.97 numbers to similar 23.98 numbers. It's an interesting problem.
This is a good lesson to never mix 29.97 and 23.976 sessions, which is also true for Avid and Premiere, as far as I know. Basic Workflow 101.

In Premiere it would be as simple as changing the sequence fps.
We got it done so it's fine, but it just goes to show that the way things are setup can't stand if this is to move forward into the NLE editing arena. Users just simply won't stick around for these kind of brick walls. They'll jump back to FCPX or whatever before they hassle over something like that again.

+1 big time on this!
This has to be one of the most important feature missing from Resolve.
I really believe that the timeline based resolution and frame rate is the way to go.
It might be quite a big technical challenge for the developers with the current architecture, who knows...
But nevertheless it will have to be addressed and implemented at some point in time...
The current workflow ( let's call it a workaround as far as I'm concerned) is clumsy at best...
All that being said, my migration to Resolve from Premiere is going better that I thought. It's a very fine piece of software, and the developers are listening...

It looks like this is a new feature in the cut page in Resolve 16.0 beta.
Presets include Portrait 1080 x 1920, Square 1080x 1080 , Ultra HD 3840x2160, Full HD 1920 x 1080 and custom project settings.
The presets are available as a pull down contextual menu in the cut page above the source/time viewer to the right of the timecode display.

To have an idenpendant timeline resolution in Resolve 16, the presets method of the previous post doesn't works for me (this setting affect all my timelines).
But there is a very simple way to do that in this new version. Right clic on the timeline -> timeline settings -> use custom settings (bottom left) and configure your resolution. It works perfectly.

Finally! This is awesome. Props to Bold Native for the explanation. I also saw the feature in 16 beta and found the icon at the top of the viewer on the cuts page to change the resolution, still no idea why that's missing from the edit page, but that still seems to change the timeline for the entire project.
If you want to change the timeline resolution, follow Bold's instructions and right click on the timeline in the media player and go to settings....

This should be marked as an answer to this question.
