How to install Davinci Resolve on Ubuntu/Pop!_OS 18.04?

PostSun Sep 02, 2018 9:57 am

Hi,

I've recently moved from Windows to Linux, one of the big reasons being Davinci Resolve being available for it... or so I thought. If I understand correctly you have to be running CentOS to use it?

Is it a way to use it on an Ubuntu based distro like Pop!_OS? If so, I could use a step-by-step guide for complete Linux noobs.

And out of curiosity, is there a particular reason Blackmagic doesn't natively support one of the biggest distros and its derivatives?

Thanks.

You might want to take a look at this thread viewtopic.php?f=21&t=56878

It goes back quite a way, so maybe start with the first post at the top (which has links to installation guides for Ubuntu and various distros based on Ubuntu) and then go to the most recent posts at the end to see if there's anything useful in there for you.

I also have Pop!OS on one of my computers but haven't attempted to install Resolve because I'm running it on an old Lenovo laptop with integrated Intel graphics, which isn't going to work for Resolve (see the configuration guide for Resolve for details on the machine specs you need; most laptops won't work very well, and you really should be running a powerful desktop machine with a real GPU, like the Leopard WS from System 76 which offers configurations with up to 4 GPUs). Kdenlive works fine, though, and I bet Lightworks would work as well.

Thank you!

I've been looking into Lightworks the past week, it looks quite nice, but isn't as feature rich as Davinci Resolve, so I'd rather stay with what I know already.

I'm on a laptop, but a quite beefy one: GTX 1070, i7-8750H, 32 GB.

I'll go through the thread and give it a shot, thanks again :)

Enterprise uses RHEL/CentOS. Not worth trying to support multiple distros when Red Hat dominates the corporate market. IMHO, the Linux builds are designed for high end users who value stability and performance.

Well, CentOS and RHEL have a huge footprint. Maybe not as large as Debian based distros. But Popis and Ubuntu are probably not as stable one would want for mission critical applications. Don't get me wrong, I use Ubuntu daily and it's perhaps more stable than Windows, but enterprise solutions stick to tried and tested platforms. On the other hand, nothing prevents you from installing on any distro you want.
