Hello community!
This is my first post here, and sorry my english guys, its not my first language
I am doing colorgrading in resolve for few years. Mostly i use my 2012 macbook pro with USB3 drives and apple cinema display. Display was calibrated of course, but i never used any bmd devices for display connection which is a shame of course.
That laptop has kinda fast processor for its year, and USB3 - and it was very-very cheap when i bought it used few years ago. But i can say - its not fast enough now, and resolve didnt allow me to use tough noise reduction for 4k and even for 2k prores files sometimes.
I rarely work for money as a colorist, but do grading for my friends (film school students) and for myself (i am dp). In the future i definitely want to do grading not only for web and rec709 devices, but for cinema projection too. And i understand that my laptop speed will never allow me to grade raw or 4k footage and my display isnt 10 bit and not capable for showing image in cinema P3 space (as far as i understand that).
So my idea is to invest around 2000$ in used equipment:
1. Oldschool 12-core mac pro (2010-2012) - i saw them for 800-1000$
2. 5 disc external raid box (around 500$) - i heard its a game changer, while harddrive speed is a bottleneck in many situations
3. Used or new 10bit P3 monitor
- BenQ PV270 may be?
- or HP Dream Color Z27x
- or Dell UltraSharp 25 - its so cheap! only 350$ for 98% of P3
4. BMD Video Interface card or extermnal device. (Which to choose?) Am i understand right that all of cheap ones output only HD, so while all displays i mention above is 2.5k and more - picture will be blurry and interpolated?
Do you guys see any mistakes in my thoughts? Is there any underwater rocks here? Will 12-core mac pro with 5-bay RAID box become real improvement? Or i need to invest some money in a bit more modern 2013 trashcans? For 2000$ used they have less powerful processors, but some of them have a lot more powerful videochips as i understand, comparing to mac pro towers.
PS
Am i understand right, that old mac pro dont have thunderbolt and USB3, so i need to buy USB3-PCI card and BMD internal HDMI-PCI card for display connection?
PPS
Or i should forget about P3 at home, and continue to work in rec709 space and export films in prores4444 and then just pass it to somebody who can do trustable conversion to P3 space and make DCP for theater?
