[Solved] Resolve 15 free: Stabilizer Crashes

PostMon Sep 10, 2018 4:10 pm

Sytem Info

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15', Mid 2014)
2,8 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB/Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
1 TB SSD (290 GB free disk space)
macOS 10.12.6

DaVinci Resolve free 15.0.1.003

(I post this assuming that the stabilizer is fully functional in the free version?? To me the feature comparison list free/studio is not clear in this point. If it’s not a feature, you can stop reading here and I need to consider buying Resolve Studio.)

I played a while with Resolve 15 Free beta, now with the production version and everything works fine. Finished my first small projects without issue.
But today I tried to stabilize a 14s clip (.mov H264), which was shot in 1080p at 50 FPS, slowed down 50% to match my 25 FPS time line.
Whenever I start the stabilizer (color panel, not fusion) Resolve crashes. I tried different options (perspective, similarity, translation), no difference. I know that my MacBook is no dedicated video workstation but is there any help? Are there any Resolve settings I can tweak? Which one should I share here?

I've created the log files. Shall I post the complete ZIP package here?

Sorry for the maybe stupid questions, I’m quite new to video editing. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Oli

Try reinserting the clip and then stabilizing first.

I tried it with several new projects and different clips from different cameras. Always the same: the progress bar appears and soon after it crashes. Attached the log files from this morning.

Hey,
Do you have the button dedicated to treating interlaced frames ticked or not in your project settings ? If yes, try to untick...

Sam,

Sorry, I can't find this option in the project settings. Is this the option you're referring to:

Enable video field processing

I checked the manual and this is the only thing I find related to "interlaced frames"...

The above option was unchecked -> stabilizer chrashed, then I checked it -> stabilizer chrashed

BTW: The tracker for eg a power window works flawless. I installed 15.1 this morning in hope that this "bug" was fixed but I ran into another issue: Resolve didn't start at all :(

Yes I referred to that option (when I had stabilizer crashes issues, BMD's Peter suggested to untick it until a newer beta and it indeed worked.). I don't have that issue anymore and therefore have no more suggestion, unfortunately...

Good for you that it works. Thanks anyway for trying to help!

Anybody else has an idea? Is my Macbook to "weak" for stabilizer? But I would expect it being rather slow (with a low performing machine) than crashing immediately...

I really need to stabilize some shaky footage and I don't want to install the 4 week trial of Premiere just to stabailize my (most shaky) clips. DR is such a great software that I really get along well with.

Peter,

I uploaded the logs in my post from Fri Sep 14, 2018 5:56 am or isn't that what you're asking for? Anyway, I have created a new one (see attachment).

Peter,
I'm not sure what you mean. External monitor? I tried both, the stabilizer crashes with and w/o external monitor connected.

With the help of BM's support I finally got the stabilizer to work:

Key was the GPU processing mode which was set to "Auto" (Resolve's default I think) -> stabilizer crahses and Resolve shuts down.

Solution:
- Setting processing mode to "Metal" -> stabilizer works! :)

- After installing the latest NVIDIA CUDA driver, stabilizer works also using "CUDA" as processing mode
(man, finding the driver for Mac is a PITA :( . NVIDIA's website is centred around Windows and their instructions for MacOS are obviously wrong. And I still can't find out how to update the "regular" card driver)

- OpenCL -> stabilizer crashes

While I'm new to all this stuff I have no idea about up/downside of using either CUDA or Metal. But I experience some strange flickering effects when working in Resolve using CUDA. So for now I'll stick with "Metal".

Hey,
If you feel lost in the jungle, just go there which will provide you both an explanation of what to search on the nVidia drivers page and all the drivers you need... without searching anymore
