IMF bug - Supplemental packages - Netflix standard

PostMon Sep 17, 2018 5:59 pm

Hi guys, I am testing the IMF functionality in Resolve and I found a bug in the software. When creating a supplemental package that alters the 5.1 track of an existing IMF, DaVinci Resolve will only include 1 audio track inside the 5.1 container, muting all other 5.1 channels. 2.0 track is not affected.
Here was the procedure:

I've created a sequence that will have both 5.1 and 2.0 audio mixes. In order to properly map the audio channels you need to create 2 main buses (under the fairlight menu):

Then you need to assign to where these tracks will output (under the fairlight menu):

Then you select what channels go to where. In my case tracks 1 to 6 corresponded to L,R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs (5.1 film). In the Fairlight menu select link the link group option:

Continues in next post due to restriction of images quantity.

Continuation:
Then I've selected two tracks that corresponded to the stereo mix:

My timeline looked like this:

So, 6 mono tracks (5.1 audio), 1 stereo track and two more mono tracks.

After going through channel-patching hell in order to properly map all tracks to their proper channel, I've exported a perfect IMF Netflix package:

Second step was importing this IMF and creating a new timeline from it in order to create a supplemental package. I've added the IMF to my media pool bin and right clicked, selected "Create New Timeline Using Composition Playlist". I've edited the audio tracks in this timeline.

Continues in part 3.

Part 3:

After importing the second IMF, I've selected the option "Create New Timeline Using Composition Playlist":

This results in a timeline with one 5.1 track and a 2.0 track. The only problem is that the 5.1 track has only one audio channel with information in it. If you look in Fairlight, you will see it:

Now, this is fine if you are only changing video and creating a new supplemental. If you need to change a portion of this audio, you need to be very careful not to use the existing audio tracks or the output will have only one channel of audio filled in the new 5.1 MXF. If I use a portion of the 5.1 track and move it around, then select all tracks to be added to the new supplemental, the result will have only one channel with audio in the 5.1 track.

Hi, Ariel.

I've had the same problem here.

Open clip atributtes of you 5.1 MXF file and interpret your audio channels as a single 5.1 track, instead of 6 mono tracks.

After that, when you create a new Compositon Playlist, you'll see all 5.1 channels of your file.

I hope it helps.

Thanks.

Hi Adriana

I followed your steps and can see the 5.1 audio elements in the Fairlight tab but not in the edit tab.
I can also only select the entire 5.1 file in the Fairlight tab.
Is there a way to split the file so that I can edit only the center channel?

Thanks
