DaVinci resolve 15 Studio on MacBook Pro 15" 2016 with eGPU

PostSat Sep 22, 2018 6:16 am

I am having issues using eGPU with my MacBook Pro. I am unsure of where the bottle neck is. In the edit screen it will playback at 23.97 but in color and deliver it will only playback at 10-11fps. I have tried everything I can think of to no avail. Here are some snapshots of my system.
OS Version 10.13.6
2.7 ghz intel core i7
16 GB 2133mhz LPDDR3
Radeon Pro 455 2048
intel HD graphics 530 1536mb
I have two eGPUs... One is Sonnet 550 with Radeon RX 580
The other is the Blackmagic eGPU.
I have tried different hard drives. Different ports. Cuda, OpenCL, Metal, etc...
The Memory, cpu, eGPU in activity monitor are only reaching 30-40 percent. What am I doing wrong? Please Help. I am working with 4k uhd Alexa mini files, or Alexa LF 4k raw files.

I'm on very similar hardware.

Have you made any progress with this issue? I wouldn't expect 4K to render much faster than this, although I've only worked with RED, not Alexa. But in general, DaVinci's going to take shortcuts to get you realtime playback while you're editing, then it slows down to give you maximum quality possible while rendering. You can check "use optimized media" and "use render cached images" in the Deliver Settings -> Advanced tab to get closer to realtime, but the quality will likely suffer. For review and approval of edits, I'll knock down the timeline resolution to a fraction of the desired deliverable, too, which also speeds turnaround.

But if you need optimal quality ASAP, make sure the destination(s) you're writing to is fast. If your source media is on a SAN or NAS, and you've got network rendering set up, you can segment an intermediate render into chunks, spit out 1ofx chunks into a good intermediate format like prores, dnx, or stills. Then combine the chunks to final delivery format. Of course, x is the number of machines you can throw at the task, and if x<2, it won't help.

Have you made sure that the Radeon Pro 455 2048 is not being used by resolve? ie that in system configuration at the bottom of that window it only lists your two 580s under GPUs?

Also make sure that one egpu is connected to the left side of the MacBook and the other is connected to the right side.

Hi there,

I had the same problem - and found a solution similar to what StefColosi wrote. Look here for more details:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=71044&p=446124&hilit=egpu#p446124

Short version:
I am working with a MacPro 15" 2016 / HighSierra 10.13.6 / AMD Pro 460 (that is approximately 1.86 TFlops) and Davinci Resolve Studio 15. I added the egpu RX570 puck from Sonnet and noticed no real improvement at first.
Then I discovered that by switching OFF the internal GPU AMD PRO 460 und selecting the eGPU ONLY the system got a real boost! The best results I got by selecting metal.

The Sonnet egpu RX570 has 5 TFlops, so it is theoretically 2,7 times faster than the PRO 460. In my system it is in fact approximately 2 times faster than than the internal card. You can use that potential (at least with the MacPro) best by using it as the ONLY graphics card.
I don't know why that is the case -but it works.
