Keyframing Clip Pitch in audio not working?

PostPosted: Wed Sep 26, 2018 3:19 pm

Hi!
I'm trying (in Resolve 15.1) to keyframe the Clip Pitch and nothing is happening. If I use Clip Pitch withouth keyframes, no problem, the pitch is shifted. But whenever I use keyframes to gradually move pitch up/down, I see the pitch sliders do their thing but the sound remains unchanged. Am I missing something here? If the keyframes functionality is there in the Inspector, it should work right? Thank you!

Ok, signature added below... The project file could be included but I just retested it with a one clip new project and it still doesn't work. What I did :
- Import one clip in a new project
- Go to Fairlight, select clip to have the effect
- In the keyframes section of Clip Pitch (Inspector) I insert a keyframe, go forward 5-10 seconds, insert keyframe again, go forward 5-10 seconds, add a last keyframe. Then I go to the middle keyframe, change Clip Pitch to something like -10 semitones.
- Playback that sequence = no change in sound pitch...

If I just playback the clip without keyframes and change Clip Pitch, it changes the sound pitch. But whenever there is a keyframe somewhere on the clip, whaterver I do manually or by keyframing, no change in pitch. You can try it out if you'd like, it takes 2 minutes. Just to confirm if I'm having some weirdness on my side only or not. Thank you!

Hi again!
Anyone who would just like to try this out for 2 minutes? I'd really like to know if I'm not doing things right or if this is a real bug. Thank you!

Yan,

I will do my test again tomorrow (and a small GIF). It works well in Fairlight Tab from the inspector + Keyframe panel ... (tested with a 5.1) :)

Hello Yan,
( Yet it worked )

Ok I admit that via the inspector panel it does not work all the time (?)

On the other hand :
Add in the mixer: Effect FairlightFX = Pitch
by engaging Automation => Plugins
Track Header: Select Plugins => Pitch => Semitones
Next: active automation (see image)
Next: On Pitch FairlighfX pannel while playing: move Semitones (mouse.. Panel..)
Stop play: effect done.

You have to get used to Fairlight automations ...Panel AFX and your favorite mouse... :)

(I recommend you read the Fairlight Part Manual and practice)

Thank you very much for your help! Automation will have to do, I guess. It's far from ideal since I want to use this to correct the pitch of the voice of an interviewee when I cut during a sentence. Droping the pitch in a second to have the right natural inflexion could be hard. I'll try your suggestion and see. Thank you!

p.s.: I'll send Blackmagic an email about this Clip Pitch bug for review.

Maybe if you play back in slow motion (e.g., holding down the k and l keys simultaneously) it'll give you time to apply the automation accurately at the right spot. Many DAWs (such as Logic, ProTools, Nuendo, etc.) offer selection-based processing where you can select any portion of a clip and apply effects only to what was selected. Hopefully Fairlight will be able to do that in the future, it's more efficient.

Thank you for the suggestion! Will try. I'm having a bit of trouble now with selecting Pitch in the automation. Seems I can't see the Pitch plugins to select it in the pulldown on the header of the track... Will continue trying! ;)

I think you first have to add Pitch to the effects on that track. So, for example, if your audio track is named A1, go to the mixer, look for track A1, and then look for "Effects" near the top, click on that and select Pitch.

Next go up and activate automation, which will then enable a list of buttons across the top of your screen; select Plugins.

Now look over at your track header on the left and you'll see an icon for automation; if you click in that dropdown menu you should now be able to find Pitch.

My suggestion above for using slow motion might help, but just be aware that the pitch will slow down too during slow-motion playback...obviously you'll have to figure out in advance how far you want the pitch to drop or rise at the spot you're trying to fix; you won't be able to do it by ear if you play back in slow-motion!

Hello Yan,

If you do not have the shaking hand and a good brushstroke with the mouse: you want to try to draw the pitch manually ... :)

By sure you enable Trim automation VS Write automation if is a Append automation :)

Thanks again for the help! And I did find the draw tool which is great! Also, I contacted Blackmagic and they tested the Clip Pitch keyframing issue and it is indeed a real bug and will be fixed in a next release. Have a nice day!

p.s.: yep, I was adding the Pitch effect to a cut clip and not to the whole track, which caused that I couldn't select "semitones" in the track header. Now it works!

same issue here on Resolve Studio 15. Inspector says clip pitch, but when enabled and altered has no effect on pitch of the audio clip.. same unexpected behaviour in edit window as in fairlight window when using inspector. just stays on one pitch, rather than changing between key frames.

Tried recording automation, but that doesn't appear to work either. clicked the automation curve icon on the pitch plugin for my desired audio track, pressed play and altered the pitch settings, but it doesn't get recorded. Also tried drawing pitch changes, but can't find a way of getting a smooth curve, only step changes, which is really not what I need..

Seems the bug is still there with 15.3... In hoping this gets fixed in a soon to be released patch? Don't want to be annoying with this, just hoping it moves along soon. Thank you dev team! ;)

Yeah! Same here! Using other software to do this, unfortunately.

My Inspector window doesn't apply pitch changes or any changes... eq... clip volume... any changes I make from he inspector window itself don't get applied. Am I doing something wrong or is this part of the bug ya'll are experiencing?

[quote="Yan Charbonneau"] will be fixed in a next release.

Still present in v16.1.0B.033.

A shame because, as a video guy, I'm really not au fait with the intricacies of DAW automation.

Still not working.. anybody fount way around? I want to use keyframing so my slow motion slips has a nice audio effect when slowing down (you can create cuts in audio tracks and apply effect only to parts you want, but the nice sound effect is actually the gradual change). Any help appreciated!

Hi, (first post)

I can't get this to work with the inspector in Studio 16.1.2.026.
But hey, I'm an old time adobe user and just made the switch recently so maybe I'm missing something.

The user manual is a good but hefty read.

Still not working in 16.2.1

I can see the pitch slider moving as per the keyframe, but the sound does not change.

How did OP contact Blackmagic? Is there an official bug reporting channel?

btw clip pith keyframes are not working...where can I see them, if I put in some? I only get keyframes for clip volume on my clips....not for pan and pitch...despite additional plugins (that would be too much for BM I guess eheheh)

Still not working in 16.2.6

Why do so many bugs in Resolve persist over several years, even though they have been reported via email and the forum, and even though they are quite obvious? :(

Same problem while working with 16.2.7.010 version... Can you recommend some other software for smooth change of pitch between keyframes?

The ability to keyframe Pitch doesn't exist in 17.
