Resolve 15 on older system.

PostMon Oct 01, 2018 6:13 pm

I decided to give version 15 a try on an older system which was fine for Resolve 11 and 12. The video cards I have are NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670.

So far after driver updates for the cards Resolve 15 does start, opens all previous and new projects, will import and move files with menu commands.

It closes immediately if any clip is hovered upon or attempt is made to play the clip or render out a timeline. It also closes if an attempt is made to initiate Fairlight.

It does not take down the computer itself.

The likely limiting factor is Windows 7. My computer has been quarantined from the internet and possible bad actors hitting it with viruses etc., so does not have the final suite of updates.

Before I go into the ordeal of allowing all the remaining Windows 7 updates and risk bringing my computer into a crying heap and me with it, if anyone can advise me if I am a hiding to nowhere or on a journey to pigheaven attempting Resolve 15 on Windows 7 with these cards, any advice will be appreciated.

I have a zip file which was created by Resolve telling about the problems but do not want to burden anyone with looking through it if Resolve 15 under Windows 7 is a definite no go with these cards.

Windows 7 is not supported, you need Windows 10 "the Creator's Update" to use a supported version.

Thank you for your response. I suspected that might be the case. I have been in touch with a filmie down the road who uses his system to make a living. He got his Windows 7 system to play with Resolve 15 but had a higher performing GPU and all the updates but has gone the Windows 10 route. I do infrequent work with my system and had a vain hope I might just get away with it.

Resolve 15 seems to be extremely sensitive in terms of hardware. My setup is 4 years old, and it works with HD video just barely. With UHD video I'd expect things to be either sluggish or painfully slow, but instead Resolve 15 keeps on crashing. It does so often, and very quickly. Sometimes all it takes to crash Resolve 15 is just to hover over a clip thumbnail. Also optimizing more than one clip at a time caused an immediate crash. The frustrating part is that it crashes so fast it's hard to even fix things. You can notice stuttering playback, but once you do, Resolve 15 crashes before you can even hit pause.

I've turned on proxy mode, dropped video monitoring resolution and optimized the media, but still things are very very delicate. Now the clip playback is ok, but multicam causes a rapid crash again. The 15.1.1 update made a slight difference, but things are still bad. I've crashed so many times I'm considering going down to Resolve 14.

The bottom line here is that there are a lot of us hobbyists out here with no budget to upgrade our hardware. We wouldn't mind working slowly and waiting for things to happen while we learn the tools, but right now we can't even do that. Please make Resolve 15 more stable when it hits bottlenecks.
