Matching lenses using color chart

PostTue Oct 02, 2018 1:12 am

I’m currently DIT on a show where the dp is using several sets of lenses (super speeds, baltars, etc). He loves the look of the baltars so he wants me to match the other lenses to the look of one of the baltars.

During prep, me and the 1st AC shot a color chart with each lense. My question is how can I use these color charts to essentially “extract” the look of the main baltar and have the other lenses match it?

The end goal is to have a lut for each lense that make its look match the primary lense and then apply a “creative look” over it. So that way, we can switch lenses, apply the “lens lut” to make the lense match the baltar then go into a “creative lut” to give it the look of the show.

Thoughts anyone?

I'd say use still frames, charts, and then use offset, curves, and primaries to bring the levels in line using the scopes. There are certain characteristics of lenses that are beyond color correction, but you can ballpark them in a reasonable way.
