Offline Edit Workflow

PostFri Oct 05, 2018 2:51 am

I’m looking to do a start to finish edit in Resolve 15. We are shooting Canon RAW and I would like to find a way to edit offline with Resolve. My desired way of doing things is to generate hi res proxy’s (minimum 4K prores 422), edit offline (meaning original RAW files are not available), and then reconnect RAW files for the final grade and delivery. So far the best workflow I have come up with is to generate Optimized Media. But when I disconnect the RAW files, the optimized media plays back, but the clips and thumbnails all present as Unlinked Media. This is not ideal, as I would like to be able to see the media I’m working with while I’m editing. I have experimented with some workflows on my own, but I thought it would be best to ask the advice of more experienced users. I’m a little frustrated so far, because FCPX and even Resolve have (more or less) push-button proxy workflows. I’m starting to think that Resolve does not. Help!

You can use Media Management to render the proxies and the "Reconform from bin" function to switch media.

Thanks. This seems like it will work. Can anyone foresee any problems if I convert everything to proxy, edit with only proxies (and the raw media offline) and then only reconfirm raw at the end? I’ll test it as soon as I get a chance, but I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has tried a similar workflow.

Depending on your media structure, you may want to ensure that you can extract reel names. Resolve can pull them from a number of places including a folder name. Just try it, the reconform functions are made for exactly this scenario.

And you'll probably want to wait until after you reconform to RAW before you color grade. You probably know this, but just to throw it out there...
