Hey everyone!
I have a PC with the following specs -
CPU: I5-8400
Motherboard: MSI Z370-A Pro
RAM: 16 GB 3000 MHz
HDD: 1 TB 7200 RPM
SMP: 550 W Bronze
Cabinet: Corsair 100R

I want to shift to Resolve 15 studio since I just bought a P4K but I'm on a tight budget. I shoot raw 4K, short videos mostly for web use. In post I do some color grade and a few effects here and there - no major animation or anything but sometimes I'll need to do chroma keying. I always export in 1080p or 720p - never going to be 4K.

Would the GTX 1060 6GB suffice for this use or should I go for the 1070? If I use a 1080p timeline or use optimised media or proxies, would either of these cards work well? Or shooting in ProRes is my only option till BRAW comes to the P4K or I can get a better GPU card?

Till now I have been trying to run Resolve 15 (and then studio) on a Macbook pro (Intel iris pro 1536 mb). I'm able to make extremely basic edits only after optimised media and quarter resolution proxy mode.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

P.S.: I'm all ears for any suggestion for change in workflow as well - if there is any optimum way for working with such requirements. I really need to just get going with Resolve. I'll buy a powerful graphics card once I can afford it - maybe a year or so down the line.

Depending on where you live, the RX580/590 might also be an option.

Maybe but if I look at the release notes of V15.2:
• Support for hardware accelerated encoding of H.264 and H.265 using specific NVIDIA GPUs on DaVinci Resolve Studio; Windows and Linux only
• Support for hardware accelerated encoding of H.264 and H.265 using Intel Quick Sync on supported hardware DaVinci Resolve Studio; Windows only

Workflow with NVIDIA?

Workflow with NVIDIA?

It's fast but the quality is ... well crap to be honest with hardware acceleration for h.264/265.
NVidia HVEC(h265) uses more space to get the same quality as software h(x).264 let alone h(x).265.

When you want to use a fast transcoder that can use intel, nvidia and amd hardware accelerated enconding and software encoding try Staxrip.

Staxrip is the only current codec converter that uses all the newest SDK's from various vendors.
And it's opensource.

I can see from your reply that you've never used it or don't know how to use it.

As you can see in my .sig, I use a GTX1060/6 and it works just fine.

Although most of my work is in 1080p (sometimes using 4K footage), the 1060 has held up just fine on the few 4K projects I've done.

Just look at the "Computing Power (FP32)" rated at base clock and the "Memory Bandwidth" to see how fast/slow the cards are in Davinci Resolve.

On 3 of our workstations we still use the GTX970 with 3.5 GB https://videocardz.com/nvidia/geforce-900/geforce-gtx-970 which is addequate for 1080p.

For 4k we use the same kind of workstation with 1 standard air-cooled VEGA FE or a threadripper workstation with 2 watercooled VEGA FE's.

So if I use a 1060 6GB, would using 4K footage on a 1080p timeline help decrease the processing load or would I have to downgrade the footage to 1080p in some other way?

Also, are you sure a 1060 would hold up against Fusion? Though I'll use only a few effects like sharpen, delta keyer etc but still? When I tried on my mac with a ProRes 422 HQ 4K footage, after using fusion there was no playback even with optimized media on quarter resolution proxy mode
