Windows 10 Version 1809 Font Changes and Resolve Text+

PostThu Dec 20, 2018 12:28 am

I'll post this here, even though no one will read it. Maybe someone will stumble across it with a search.

In the new Windows 10 version 1809 update, Microsoft has made changes in the font area.

In the past, when you installed .ttf fonts. it required Admin privileges and installed the font for all users.

In 1809, you can install .ttf fonts for the local user without Admin privileges. That sounds nice, but if you do that, the font won't show up in the Resolve Text+ font list. It will be in the Text font list.

With 1809, if you install a font, when you right click on the .ttf file, you have a new menu called "Install For All Users". It requires Admin level privileges. And you have the old Install menu. If you want the font to be available in the Resolve Text+ font list, use the "Install For All Users" menu.

Thanks Dwaine
I upgraded one of our systems to 1809 recently, so this is very good to know.

Help! I only have 5 fonts available for Text+. I have tried reinstalling all the fonts on my system using the "right click Install for all" mentioned above but it doesn't seem to help. Restarted Resolve. Restarted computer. Tried downloading and installing fonts. Nothing seems to work. They appear in the normal text app.
Font path: C:\Windows.old\WINDOWS\Fonts
Windows 10
Ryzen 5 Build
Resolve 15.2.3 (free)
Any help is really appreciated!

That seems like an odd location for the fonts. They should be in:

C:\Windows\Fonts

Well somehow they are in both. For the record, I didn't change anything so these must be the system defaults. But these fonts won't give me the "Install For All Users" install option. Not sure what to do. Attached a image.

Regarding your previous post, the right click option to Install For All Users is for when you are installing a new .ttf font file. It's not for fonts that are already installed.

That said, this whole thread is about installing NEW font files on version 1809.

Font's that were already on the system previous to the 1809 version were already available to all users and should be visible in Text+.

Can you confirm that the fonts you are not seeing in Text+ were installed before or after you were running version 1809?

Both. I reinstalled the fonts that were not showing up and they still didn't show. I tried installing new fonts and they don't show. The new fonts show up in other programs, as do the rest of them.

Don't use Explorer to see where the fonts are. Use some 3rd party file manager, like Total Commander. Explorer automatically shows you all of the installed fonts instead of real C:\Windows\Fonts folder contents. So, use something like Total Commander to see if your fonts are actually there. If they're not, just copy them there using the same 3rd party file manager. Helped me.

P.S. Total Commander hides some system folders, including 'Fonts'. You need to make them visible by activating 'show hidden files' option in Total Commander.

Thank you everyone for the help. But it just keep getting weirder. I installed TC only to find that the Fonts folder doesn't even show up. It still shows up the same in Explorer (pic attached). So the folder even really there? I'm so very confused. I tried making a new Fonts folder in C\Windows but it just deletes the folder after I enter the name.

TC hides some system folders. You need to make them visible. Configuration - Options - Display.

I just added a button to the toolbar. Alternatively, you can just use cm_SwitchHidSys command in the field at the bottom of TC window to make hidden files and folders visible:

Or just use cd Fonts command (while in Windows\ folder) to go straight into the Fonts folder:

WOW! I can't believe this. On a whim I updated to 15.2.4 and now the fonts are showing up. Guess it has some sort of patch for the issue. Or something I did earlier took affect. Either way sorry for all the trouble and thanks for hanging in there with me. Hope this helps someone else!

It's June 2019, and this post saved my bacon - thanks, all.

Incidentally, if the "Install for all Users" menu item isn't showing up (as per the earlier screen shot) it's probably because the font file is already in a font directory (in which Windows will display font groups, not individual font files). So just install from some other directory.

This is just too exhausting. I mean I need to close and reopen DaVinci Resolve everytime I need to add new fonts. When Resolve was just an Color/Edit software it was acceptable but now it has Fusion in it. Sometimes when I am working on motion graphics I need to try different fonts and usually I like to control this fonts with an additional software like FontBase or NexusFont. Because if I load too much font to my system without managing them my font list goes crazy. It becomes a list that goes to infinity and beyond. I don't want that, no one want that.

And Windows' Font managing system is also terrible, there is no categorizing or folder options. After a while I lose the track if I rely on it. Therefore an additional software is required to deal with this situation. However, like I addressed this issue about a year ago;

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=77144

Resolve's backend is incompatible with these applications. And the weird thing is that while you can see and use the fonts that installed with these application with simple "Text" Effect, you can't use them with "Text+" or inside Fusion. This is just crazy. This actually means that whatever code blocks that developers use for Text, they use completely different code block for Text+ and Fusion. I know this is a free software (at least I'm using the free version), also this is a very simple issue to fix. Just use in Fusion and Text+ whatever you used in Text.

I know Text+ is heavily depending on Fusion software but it shouldn't be that hard to add this functionality. We are in 2019. Word does it, Adobe Suite does it and this might hurt your feelings but I'm going to say it anyway.. even Notepad does it. Notepad...

In addition to them I'm really grateful that you share this beautiful software with world for free. And you actually making an amazing job so far, I need to give you that. But this is a very annoying issue. Try to picture this problem like this. You are a F1 Pilot and whenever you need to go in Pit Stop there would be no pit crew and you need to stop your engine, then get out of your vehicle, put some gas in it, change your tires yourself then get in your vehicle and continue to race like through this workflow. It sounds really inefficient, right?

The exact problem is getting the fonts that are in my system to show under the fusion titles. I can of course see all of my loaded fonts under the regular title options.

When these fonts were installed, were they done by an account with administrator privileges and made available to all users? If you're not sure, maybe try de-installing and re-installing as an Admin.

According to the DR manual, Fusion can have issues with fonts handled by 3rd-party font managers. Nothing about the rest of DR having issues. So since Fusion is cobbled into DR that part must be handled separately.
