What have I started??? WHY did you mess with the config.dat file???

For anyone else reading this, the config.dat files I've sent to people who have damaged config.dat files are hand crafted for those users. DO NOT USE a config.dat file I've sent to someone else!

Do you have any existing Resolve project data you care about, or is this a first time install?

Good morning Dwaine,

Yes, I tried to replace in the past my config.dat file from another post/user, sorry..

No, I don't want to keep any old project, just to make Davinci work again.

In the past I also tried to install version 16 from a fresh install, but the same issues remain.

Thanks again for your time and patience.

@Ivan:

OK, then we'll do a clean install again, using the procedure below:

Uninstall Resolve using Windows Control Panel - Programs and Features.

Also uninstall any other Resolve related apps, such as Resolve Keyboard, Resolve Panels and Fairlight apps.

Don't uninstall PostgreSQL 9.5.

Don't continue with the items below unless the uninstall items above worked!

After Uninstalling Resolve, check that the C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve folder has been removed. If the DaVinci Resolve folder still exists, delete it.

For the next steps, you need to make sure you can see hidden files/folders in File Explorer. You can Google for how to do that, if it's not already in that mode, and you are not sure how to enable that.

Rename folder C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve to C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve.bak

Rename folder C:\Users\ivanl\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve to C:\Users\ivanl\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve.bak

Now reinstall Resolve. Don't install any Fairlight related items.

Launch Resolve. What you should see is the onboarding video. Watch or skip that and do the Quick Setup.

Now does Resolve run? If not, send another Resolve log and Windows System Info .NFO file.

@Tarek: I don't understand what your issue is regarding the .NFO?

Run the System Information app, and select File - Save to generate an .NFO file.

Good afternoon Dwaine,

Thanks again for all your time and patience.

It worked!, but only once... I saved a video with all the process (it's also shown how to achieve the .NFO files and DR logs in case anybody has problems getting them).

It's very strange, isn't it?

Thanks and regards.

Is Resolve crashing? Or is it hanging and you are force closing it?

I don't know that you've done this yet. If not: disconnect all USB devices except a wired keyboard and mouse. Disconnect any USB Bluetooth dongles, wireless headsets, audio or camera devices, USB HDMI capture dongles, etc etc.

I see you for sure have some sort of Logitech gaming speaker that's USB connected. For sure disconnect that.

After disconnecting all the USB stuff, does Resolve work?

I'm now part of the 25 minute Resolve startup club. I was working on a project using the colors tab and the program crashed. I waited a few seconds then relaunched the program and ever since this point I have not experienced normal Resolve operations. I started the app and went to get lunch - 45 minutes later it was open but as soon as I attempt to load a project the app takes another 10-15 minutes to load the project. Once I'm in the project it is also extremely slow. Thumbnails may or may not load in before the program eventually crashes again.

I have followed the various guidances from this thread including uninstalling the program, reinstalling the program, uninstalling again, reinstalling v 17. Updated GPU drivers from nvidia approved studio drivers to game ready dist. Still taking 10+ minutes at the 'Looking for control surfaces' stage of the splash screen.

This is incredibly confounding since I literally did nothing between normal program use and it crashing and not being able to restart within a reasonable period of time.

Good evening Dwaine,

It worked!!!!!!! :D

I disconnected all my USB devices and reconnected them again, one by one. The problem came with my USB videocamera (AUKEY 1080p). Once is disconnected, Davinci starts flawless and without any issues.

I think the problem is related with the audio of the webcam, as if I disable it, Davinci starts with no issues:

Again, one million thanks for your time and patience, is great to know that Davinci resolve has this great customer support and people behind. :)

"Looking for Control Surfaces"

Long time user of multiple studio versions of DR... currently running 17.

Came into work and tried to start up DR as usual - Would show the cut screen and "looking for control surfaces" dialogue.... Then vanish.

No trace of DR in task manager - No weird background processes ... No overnight driver updates... No weird security patches... None of the usual suspects... I scrolled this thread to no avail.

One comment about removing every accessory except hard wired keyboard caught my eye.

Yesterday, I was using a usb speaker to do some audio quality checks. It's the only system change since yesterday.

I had opened and closed DR yesterday, but not shut down computer... hence today, the USB speaker was part of Windows 10 boot up process.

I unplugged the USB speaker on a whim, and DR started up immediately on my next try! ... No reboot... Just unplug speaker... click link.

At first, this seemed bizarre, but closer thinking is that this might be an obscure bug where DR was looking for a control surface... found the usb speaker and "thinking" it was an accessory... got stuck in the handshake process.

This is likely a special case and possibly contributed to by some dodgy handshake protocols of the USB speaker as well.

Hope this helps someone along the way.

Cheers,

Nx

This may help, I had the same problem with i7 laptop. The loading screen would appear for a few seconds then disappear. Fixed this by unplugging a video capture device that I had from a usb port and all works now as expected.

Dwaine,

I have the same problem here. Resolve is hanging or running extremely slow. Tried to disconnect all USB devices including a video cam and the USB mouse following the discussion of this thread and uninstall and install version 17 clean. Updated GPU driver to the latest. Updated Dell as well. Would you please have a look at the capture log file and system information? Thank you in advance.

@Bo: I'd like to look at the system info, but unfortunately, you didn't send any.

It looks like a typical USB device hang. If you've really disconnected all the USB stuff, then the next thought would be a firewall or security software issue blocking network ports that Resolve needs to communicate over.

You can do the following in a Windows Powershell window, opened as an Admin user:

Enter this string:

netsh int ipv4 set dynamicportrange protocol=tcp startport=49152 numberofports=16384

This will make sure all the ports are normally assigned. Try Resolve now. If still an issue, then try this:

Get-NetTCPConnection | Where-Object { $_.State -eq "Listen" -and $_.LocalPort -eq 1144 } | ForEach-Object { (get-process -id $_.OwningProcess).Description }

If there is an app on the system interfering with Resolves port access, it will be displayed after running this.

If none of that helps, it could be third party OFX plugins causing a hang. Look to see if you have this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX

If you do, rename the OFX folder to OFX.tmp. Now see if Resolve will launch. If so, one of the OFX plugins is causing an issue.

Hello,
I couldn't start Davinci Resolve on my Dell XPS 17 9700 laptop (GTX 1650 Ti).

The following steps worked for me (no guarantee if this causes any system damage, but it shouldn't):

1. Install latest Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti studio driver (maybe optional, but I did)
2. Uninstall Intel SDK for OpenCL (Settings, Apps...)
3. Download and install latest Intel Graphics Windows 10 DCH Drivers (I downloaded version 27.20.100.9466)
4. Uninstall and reinstall Resolve (Latest version)

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

It appears that your Red Giant plugins are causing the issue.

As a test to prevent those from loading, in File Explorer, go to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX

Then rename the Plugins folder to Plugins.tmp

That should prevent those plugins from being loaded. See if that allows Resolve to start. If it still doesn't start, send another Resolve log. The NFO file you sent was not correct. To generate a proper NFO file, open the Windows System Information app, and select the File - Save menu. That will create a .NFO file. Send that as well.

Looks like it was working on 12-12-2021 from 19:14 to 19:48 (and earlier) with project epl and project m. Then Resolve was exited.

On the same date, at 22:42, Resolve was launched, and now it's not detecting the Intel iGPU, as it was previously. And that's causing GL extension loading errors, leading to your hang issue.

So the million dollar question is, what changed on the laptop between those times? Did you make some sort of graphics related change to the system? Or perhaps a Windows update? If you did make a change, try undoing that, and see if that helps.

Hi, I seem to encounter a similar behavior, except that I'm in Win11 with Resolve 17.

The behavior is : The boot screen freeze while displaying "Loading Fairlight Engine"

- I've never used Davinci on this computer (but installed it on my girlfriend's one with success)
- I uninstalled and removed all the directories in Program File, AppData, and Documents then reinstalled without success
- A few months ago I tried to install it while I was on Win 10 and it was not working either; I never investigated further at that time.
- I joined my NFO & Logs

Thanks !
Benoit

Remove it from the dock, and/or whatever is providing the "DisplayLink USB Adapters" in the Components - Display area of System Information. Whatever is feeding all the external displays.

Does it work with those removed?

None of my USB-C docks present themselves as DisplayLink USB Devices on any of my HP Intel/NVIDIA laptops. So I can't say for sure what to try.

But look in Windows Device Manager, in the Display Adapters area. If the DisplayLink USB devices are shown there, you can try disabling them and see if that allow Resolve to run. If that works, at least you can use the rest of the docks functions.

This morning I tried the following :

- Downloaded and installed the last drivers available for my docking (Model Wavlink WL-UG39DK4) and rebooted everything : same result.
- Plugging the docking in my computer with nothing plugged in (no Ethernet, No monitor, No USB) : The Davinci startup screen appears for a second and then disappear and nothing else happen
- Plugging the Ethernet Cable only : Freeze at the same place as if everything is plugged in
- Disable LAPDOCK (DisplayLink Graphic adapter) : IT WORKS !

So I will be able to use Davinci that way ! Thanks for the cues !

Here's something else to check. If you have the OpenCL pack from Microsoft installed, try uninstalling it:

Resolve is unhappy with the Intel OpenCL.dll file, for some reason.

My only guidance would be to use DDU to uninstall the Intel GPU driver, then see if Resolve will launch.

Assuming it will, then reinstall the Intel driver. There doesn't seem to be one on the Razer site for your notebook, so you'd need to let Windows reinstall it, or get it from the Intel driver download site.
