UPDATE - 15.3 playback worsened with MS Update KB4482887

PostPosted: Fri Mar 08, 2019 2:07 am
by kcurrie
After installing Microsoft's Cumulative Update KB4482887 to my Windows 10 Pro, 1809, playback stuttered on the edit page of DR 15.3 -- framerates dropped from 60+ to mid-to-high 30s. Microsoft is aware of framerate problems in some games, but, obviously, it also impacting DR. Solution -- uninstall KB4482887. Then wait for Microsoft to release an update without this effect.

Edit

It seems like a newer Microsoft upgrade KB4489899 fixes the problem.

I noticed scrubbing became stuttering too. Even with HD Prores footage.

Stuttering was a big problem for me 2 version ago...BMD really needs to work on that.

I'm running KB4492978 which looks like the next one on and I don't have a problem. Maybe this has been fixed?

Thanks a lot for the warning Kent.

Unfortunately I saw your post only after I installed KB4482887 and the playback was indeed worse after the update.
Tried to fix the issue with updating to NVIDIA driver 419.17. No effect.

I uninstalled KB4482887.
Timeline playback performance is back to normal.

How do you specifically uninstall KB4482887?

If you are in Windows 10, type "Control Panel" in the search box. Click on the Control Panel entry. Make sure the "View by" on the upper right is set to Large Icons. Click on "Programs and Features". On the upper left click on "View Installed Updates". Click on the update you want to uninstall and then choose uninstall. Remember, you do this at your own risk. Something can always go wrong during a driver rollback.

Pretty simple, follow this person's video:

This is a known issue with KB4482887, as per https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4482887/windows-10-update-kb4482887
After installing KB4482887, users may notice graphics and mouse performance degradation with desktop gaming when playing certain games, such as Destiny 2.

So it is indeed wise to uninstall the patch and wait for a fix.

I don't know if this will make any difference, but I will throw this out there.
I'm still running Win 10 1803. I just checked and I do not have the KB4482887 update installed.
My 15.2 playback was very good for my system. However, just the installation of 15.3 changed that.
Nothing else on the system has changed from 15.2 to 15.3 except the update to 15.3.

So, is there absolutely no doubt that the KB4482887 update alone is responsible for the slowdown or is there something in 15.3 that causes the slowdown?

No it's not. I'm in the same boat. I don't have that update in yet and did see a slow down in performance with 15.3

I installed KB4482887 and then upgraded to 15.3 and don't see an issue on my system. How much system memory do you have and what is your storage setup?

Tests by Puget also connect it to the latest nvidia drivers. See their article linked above.

I'm running 32GB of ram and I have 16TB of storage. I'm also running a 1080ti.

Thanks for the Puget Sound link. I rolled back to 416.81 and my performance returned. As far as I can tell, it's an Nvidia driver/Resolve issue. Microsoft may throw something into the mix, but I can't put the full blame onto them.

Thanks again.

May be XBOX Game overlay affects somehow?
Try to check in Windows' ALL Preferences - GAME (with XBOX logo) section and turn off game recording overlays. With NVIDIA also may be it is worth to check and turn of NVIDIA Streaming/Recording overlay in GeForce Experience app

Today is Microsoft's Patch Tuesday and MS says that KB4489899 "[a]ddresses an issue that may degrade graphics and mouse performance with desktop gaming when playing certain games, such as Destiny 2, after installing KB4482887." Fingers crossed.

Just read this and you'll understand why NVidia changed the drivers (memory leak).

https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4772/~/security-bulletin%3A-nvidia-gpu-display-driver---february-2019

It's fixed with the new driver, it's just a bit slower now (10..20%) with effects and TNR.

Hmm, I have KB4489899 installed and my nvidia driver is 419.35 and I'm now at the point where I can't play clips, even with the grades turned off, without massive stuttering

Kaitlyn,
thanks for the info.

I am with Nvidia Driver 419.17 and all is fine with KB4489899 installed.
Will not update to 419.35.

I see Nvidia have also released a Creator Ready driver 419.67. Resolve is not explicitly mentioned.

OOPS, I see there is another thread discussing this release already. :o

Timeline ( Alt / + ) speed becomes normal . 60fps = 60fps
Timeline ( Alt / - ) slowing down 60 fps = 10 / 5 / 4/ 1 fps playback.
I think the problem is convergence and divergence ..

NVIDIA 419.67 improves performance

I just loaded the latest Nvidia driver, 419.67 from March 25th, and my playback performance has bounced back. Some of the issue was the driver and some of the issue was the KB update.
I never had KB4482887 installed on my system, just the series of drivers from December to early March.
The November driver worked fine. Now, the March 25th driver has improved upon that performance.
I have an older system and the difference is quite noticeable.
