Best as defined by what metric?

- Cineform -> FFMPEG H264 PQ 12 slow for normal video
- Cineform -> FFMPEG H264 NVENC lossless for screencast
- Cineform if you have the bandwidth
- H264 Intel QSC at very high bitrates

Some options.

Or if it's short simply upload any intermediate codec.

Hi,

I've been using H.264 in a Quicktime or mp4 wrapper for years. Only starting to get into H.265 but only with short videos as the transcoding times are too long for me.

But you mention Cineform. What is cineform exactly, is it a wrapper or a codec and how do I install it into DaVinci Resolve?

And finally why do you recommend it over the previous way I've been doing it?

Cineform is a high-quality codec in the class of DNxHR or ProRes (at least). Much better than H.264 or H.265 for master copies. You don't need to install it, it's already there:

Oh cool, thanks for your information. But I can't help but think that the info given to the OP isn't right for simply uploading to Vimeo. If it's like DNxHD and ProRes then it's an I-frame codec and will be a huge file size.

So to the OP, select MP4 and H.264 with a bitrate of no more than 60,000Kbps for maximum quality. I don't recommend H.265 unless you have an extremely good PC.

Better always depends on what metrics are important to you for a certain use case.

E.g. Cineform as Master for a screencast is not terribly attractive. Much slower to encode and decode than H264 NVENC lossless, 50 times the file size, less quality.

Benefits of uploading Cineform to YouTube over H264 QP12? You safe the time for extra H264 encode, but quality wise none.

Not exactly right:
- If you have the Studio version,
- an NVIDIA GPU that supports it (see BMD configuration guide)
- you can get an MP4 or H265 HEVC encode at ... very fast....

In this case the CPU is no longer the priority and is not too busy.

You have to compare what is comparable. :)

If Vimeo always re-encodes (as YT does) and you have a fast upload, it can make sense to send them a mezzanine format.

If they define which format they want not to re-encode it, deliver that.

But there are better encoders for H.264 than Resolve, like ffmpeg with x264. If you want to go that route, a mezzanine codec out of Resolve is again advisable.
