Making a trailer

PostWed Mar 20, 2019 12:39 am

Hello!!

So, here's what I'm trying to do.
I'm posting videos around 5 minutes long to my VLOG channel.
Simultaneously, I'm posting short snippets of the videos to a Facebook page so people can immediately watch something, then click to go through to Youtube and watch the whole thing.

Now, the way I've been doing this is, I just export the full video, and then I go back, change in and out points, and export again to get a shorty video.

BUT

What I would like to do is, have snippets of different parts of the video, like a trailer.
Is it possible to set multiple in/out points? Or maybe some other way to do this?

Thanks!

If you want it all in one clip, like a trailer, why not copy your Timeline and cut a trailer? That would certainly be the easiest and give you the most control over the final product, the render, and give you options to create opening and closing titles if you want with calls to action to watch the rest on your vlog, etc.

Is there a reason you don't want to do it that way?

So wait....

The way I had thought of doing it was to render out the video, then import it back in again and do the trailer with that as the only media source and do in/out points and drag all of them into a new timeline as if I was making a whole new video, but obviously using the one rendered video as the source.

I didn't wanna do that because then that video is already compressed and the trailer will lose even more quality.

BUT you say "copy the timeline".

Do you mean copy it from within the media pool, open a new project and paste it?
Does that carry it over uncompressed?

Select the timeline. Under the Edit menu, choose Copy Timeline.

Re-edit that copy for the trailer.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but this is mentioned in the FREE Resolve training book "The Definitive Guide to DaVinci Resolve". In fact, many of the example lessons are just different timelines at different stages of completion to show the points they are making in that chapter.

I know people are really quick to say RTFM, but for this the 2000+ page user guide is not the first choice and the training books should be. Training books can be downloaded here https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... e/training I learned a lot from that first book, and I've been working around non-linear editing since about 1993 and linear editing from 1984 up to about 2004 (lastly on DVCam tapes).

Again please don't take this the wrong way, this is one of those teach a person to fish vs. giving them a single meal. BMD spent a ton of money on these books and we can show our appreciation for their work by learning the material within. A lot of users don't know about the training materials so it is worth mentioning them. Also a bunch of videos and everything has media you can download to follow along. Worth every penny to me, even though I bought two of the printed books (and may buy the rest as I go). The printed versions are full color on good paper so the screen shots can really be seen clearly.

Right. That's the beauty of simply creating a second timeline of your project. You can have the final version and a trailer using the same original media!

Edited to add: Greg's point about checking out their training is also right on. I've watched their training videos on YouTube and I learned a ton, even with years of experience editing all sorts of projects across Final Cut, Premiere, Vegas, etc. I've revisited the videos a few times when I remember there's something cool they showed me but I didn't remember because I don't do it often enough.

If you find your timeline in the pool, right click and there should be an offering to duplicate

Make a new timeline. Drop your original timeline onto this new timeline. It will turn into a compound clip. Pull up the parts of the video you don't want to export leaving behind only your Facebook excerpts.

In the delivery page select "individual clips."

Igor is the expert of experts when it comes to trailers. I think he's worked on more movie & TV trailers than most people have actually seen.
