Why no 'nearest neighbour' scaling option?

PostWed Mar 20, 2019 1:41 pm

I'm screen-recording a video game and need to upscale my 256×224 image to 1920x1080. (non-stretch).

I want it to be perfectly sharp, pixel for pixel, but I'm not seeing the option. I have the option in Apple's Compressor 4. Why does DaVinci Resolve only give me sharp, smoother, bicubic, bilinear?

I've tried the x2, x3, x4, option in Clip Attributes and they don't work the way I want either.

My second problem regarding scaling is why when I zoom into my image in the viewer it goes all blurry. I want to be able to zoom in as Apple's Preview app does. Where you can see the individual pixels, not just a mash of colours.

So I guess I want 'nearest neighbour' resizing for both scaling my video and zooming in to the viewer.

Just export best quality ProRes at 256×224 and upscale at other app.

To turn off viewer zoom blur, switch Monitor scaling - Basic in project settings

You can resize the footage in the Fusion page. The MediaIn will use the original footage raster, not the project raster.

How exactly do you do this? I'm not familiar with Fusion?

That may not be possible. Scaling up does have limitations.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Nearest neighbor filter does just that, except there is resolution conflict, neither width nor height is exact multiple of source size, so you might get a bit distorted version. But it probably won't matter in your case.
