From "GPU memory full" to "No OpenCL"

PostMon Apr 01, 2019 10:11 pm

A couple of days ago I updated DaVinci Resolve from 14.xx to 15.3 and I started to frequently hit the infamous "GPU memory full" error with video thumbnails displayed as random video noise.
The project was a brand new one containing some 1080P video footage, titles and audio tracks: nothing really special, same stuff I have been doing nicely with version 14.
After searching the forums I decided to try a video driver update, bumping up my almost 1-year-old Radeon drivers: now I'm unable to even start DaVinci Resolve 15 which complaints about "no OpenCL capable GPU".

GPU-Z reports my card/drivers support OpenCL 1.2 Full and my system, even if not top notch, isn't that shabby at all with an AMD Athlon X4 750K 3.4GHz accompanied by 16GB 666MHz DDR3 RAM: should be more than enough for 1080P basic video editing...

What am I supposed to do? Revert to an older version of the drivers and enjoy the constantly popping up error?

In resolve settings, did you choose cuda/auto/openCL?

I had it set to Auto, but trying to switch to opencl/cuda and manual no video card is listed.
I tried to downgrade the driver version, first to 19.3.3 (no joy), then to 19.1.2 (again, no joy), finally to 18.9.3 which finally turned to allow DaVinci Resolve to stop complaining at startup.

As GPU-Z has always displayed the exact same values, I believe the issue must be related to the way DaVinci Resolve queries the drivers for openCL support: something must have changed in the AMD drivers API starting from a version between 18.9.3 and 19.1.2 and DaVinci Resolve is unable to correctly parse the answer to openCL support for my video card, which is reported by GPU-Z as (note for the developers) Full OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (2671.3) .

If Blackmagic wants to allow us to upgrade the drivers they have to fix this issue, otherwise we are stuck at version 18.9.3 (or maybe a couple of versions after, I didn't try 18.10.*, 18.11.* nor 18.12.*).

If there is any help I can provide, just give me a shout...

Adrenalin 19.1.1 Works with rx580 (mobile) and a10-7800 APU here...19.3.3 was overall unstable, but worked ok in resolve

I've tried 19.3.2, with no joy, then attempted with 19.1.1 which works indeed.
Considering 19.1.1 works while 19.1.2 doesn't, I find some confirmation in my belief: the issue should be in the API usage made by DaVinci Resolve, but the information provided in here should be a good starting point to fix this... Is any BM developer listening?

Once again, my graphics card is AMD Radeon G9 270E

I'll repeat again what I've said a few times already:

All of the appropriate AMD drivers work with multiple AMD cards on multiple Windows systems here.

Hard to determine what the issue is when it's not reproducible.

First of all, I must thank you for the software you are giving for free because it is important to recognize I didn't pay a dime for this.

Being a software developer myself, I try to fight against the habit of saying "it works on my machine": I'm giving you pieces of information and the availability of time to try to fix this issue.

I like very much your software, but once I upgraded to version 15 everything went south and I am experiencing a lot of issues. The whole point of giving a piece of software for free is to promote the premium version and build up a user base... If you don't want my feedback that's fine for me...

I'm experiencing continuous crashes, had to install 8 different drivers to find one that works, but now I'm now back to crashes... now it is even worse because the software crashes without any warning and I keep losing my edits...

I'm now trying to go further back with video drivers, but I'm sadly getting closer to move to some other software and trust me, I really don't wish to because I was starting to get used to your software.

All in all, it's my loss, I understand that, but if my experience is not isolated, then it can become yours too...

After a few more tentatives I must correct myself: the most recent working version of the Radeon drivers working for me is 18.9.3: I've downloaded and tried no less than 20 versions, each and every time using DDU to clean up before moving to the next one. Starting from 18.10.1 DaVinci seems unable to identify my card support for openCL.

I also noticed drivers version 18.4.1 creates the "GPU memory full" popup, but moving to more recent version it instead reports a warning: I'll try to add more details.

I'm also not sure what is causing all the continuous crashes, it appears things get nasty when using rich text titles (Text+), but I don't have enough test scenarios to say it for sure. I managed to render a video containing such titles (only at 5% render speed) and I got some weird artifacts in the output.

Finally, it might be only a sensation, but it seems saving a project increases the chances of a sudden crash: is there a way to somehow consolidate or repair a project?

I've attached the collected logs for reference and inspection.

Archive the database, there is a "optimize" function in the database manager, it will slim it down.
