Resolve 16 Studio won't start at all

PostMon Apr 08, 2019 9:39 pm

Just installed the Studio 16 beta. There were no errors during installation, but Resolve won't actually start. It will start to start (i.e. it shows up in the Task Manager) but within 20-30 seconds, it just plain disappears from the task manager and nothing happens. Not even a crash.

Resolve 15.2.x worked perfectly fine on this system.

So many things -
Are you new to Resolve?

Those of us that went through the beta process last go round are prepared for the glitches.

First the feature guide says to update GPU drivers, did you do that?

16 also employs collaborative features, therefore it won't even scan plugins without a firewall exception. Disable any software firewall and try again. Windows Defender pop ups will not go on top of DR. IF DR now loads, enter the exceptions in your firewall and try again. I am not quite sure why the program can't tell it's on the same machine as the "server" components, if coded properly when DR is on the same machine it should be scanning localhost instead of the NIC IP address. Do you have multiple Network Interfaces?

If you installed absolutely everything, uninstall absolutely everything. Then reinstall only DR and Postgres. Unless of course you have the fairlight hardware or have a control panel, then only install what's relevant. When I had something go this bad, I had to dig in the registry and clear it manually as DR's uninstaller doesn't do a very good job of it.

I personally have been pleasantly surprised thus far. The complaints I've seen other users mention look easy to fix and probably will be handled shortly.

I myself disagreed with the hardware bit because every other NLE works fine, but in Resolve it does matter. You can see my hardware in my signature. With resolve open playing a 4 video track 1080P60 timeline, 22% of my CPU is used and 39% of my memory is used. Some of that CPU is Dante overhead, but none the less.

I also as of 16 wouldn't try to install it on an i5, due to the AI features. Or at least not the studio version.

Do you have third party OFX plugins installed? Move them out from the Program Files/ Common FIles/OFX/plugin directory to a temoprary directory. Start DR 16, Exit it, then add them one by one (or in batch or 10-15) back to the 3RP3U31L2AC81. Restart DR 16 after you put back 10-15 OFX plugins back in OFX/plugins directory then exit DR. It is boring to start and exit but it works.

I too have similar config.

Media - 1 .MTS clip

Going to the delivery page results in a crash.

Please advise

Well, upgrading the Graphic Card drivers made Resolve at least come up and start. Weird. I thought my drivers were up to date, so my apologies for not checking that first.
Now on with the reporting of crashes.

I had browsed the forum and removed all OFX plugin and it still does not alter the crash. Is it just me or does Davinci resolve not support i7 and nvidia 1060

Does anyone have this problem on a mac?
I have an old macbook - but until now resolve 15 worked without any problems.
I was mainly working in hd projects in prores.
But in Version 16 I just see the startup screen until it says "ready".
After that it just shuts down.

Congrats to the dev team on the new version. Excited to upgrade to it once it is stable.

On Windows 10 with a 2080. Boots up. Will update the database within project manager but then becomes unresponsive when I add media to a timeline. Will crash instantly if I open a project with an existing timeline. R15 Studio runs on this machine. Looked at Readme that ships with R16 Studio C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Documents and missing information about removing registry comments. If there are comprehensive steps to uninstall or install I'd love to give that a go.

After an update, for some reason you can end up with two panel driver folders in the filerepository, which can cause exacty those problems.

Delete them, and do a new clan install (uninstall or delete everything that says "Resolve") and everything should work.

In case it says something like "you don't have the permission to access the file", you need to take ownership of the filerepository folder (and all subfolders) first.

Right click the folder, click Properties
Click the Security tab
Click the Edit button.
Now add your account and give it Full Control
Click Ok
Click Yes at the "Windows Security"-prompt
At the "Error Applying Security"-prompt click Continue once and Cancel at the next
Click Ok at the "Windows Security"-prompt

Thanks for the response Frank. When you say file repository do you mean C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve? I don't seem to have anything with panel in the title there except for PanelLCDControlFile insde of control\

No no - it's somewhere deep in the Windows system folder, just do a search for "filerepository" on C

In there are probably two folders with "Panel" in their name, you have to delete them.

I did have this issue. Removed it and re-installed worked. I believe my Monitoring card for whatever reason is incompatible R16. When I enable the Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K Davinci becomes unresponsive. I'll have more time to trouble shoot after this week.

Guys I am beside myself I don't know what to do. I have the problem where Resolve is not loading; it doesn't crash it just doesn't fully load. I have tried the things that are mentioned in this thread, and I have checked the other thread and NOTHING seems to work. The closest I got is once after uninstalling and deleting all remaining files, I was able to get to the screen where the software told me my computer is sufficient but it had a question about my video card. After I progressed by that, I got a quick "abort message:. Every other time I've tried and everything I've done I just get nothing. I there anything else that you can think of?? My system is as follows:

ASUS M32CD
Intel i5-7400 @ 3.00 GHz
16GB DIMM RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 1060 with 3 Gig RAM
Driver is NVIDIA 442.92 4/16/20
Windows 10 Home V. 1909 updated today

Is there any other suggestions that you have? I love the product but I am at my wits' end. It worked fine for my purposes until I installed this new graphics card yesterday.

Thanks so much!!!!

Just to let all know that, in Windows 10 Home, Version 1909 + Davinci Resolve 16.2.2, using compatibility mode worked for me. Thank you for the person that suggested that.

Windows suggested using Windows 8 compatibility and after that I opened my project, finalized it and now I'm going to export it.

Before that, what I had was:

- One week ago: Fresh Windows 10 Install (genuine)
- One week ago: Installed Resolve 16 and used for the first time, project etc.
- Started using, everything seems to work, not so optimized, but worked.
- Nvidia update drivers, seems to work too
- Two days ago I saved my project, the other day It wont open. (Resolve splash screen, them nothing, etc)
- Started looking for answers, tried re-install, pagination file increase, admin mode, etc
- Nothing worked until I tried Windows Compatibility mode.
- Now, at least today, its working.

My system:

Intel i7 860 @ 2.80GHz
16Gb Ram
Geforce GTX 970

Resolve Studio 16.2.2. (latest version) stopped starting. It worked alright, no crashes. My brand new iMac Pro updated it's OS, now 10.15.5, maybe because of this Davinci stopped launching. I could not find a solution on this Forum. I tried to uninstall and install Resolve. Did not help, though free version launched, but not the bought one. Any ideas?

Kimmo that's an underpowered GPU for Resolve. The minimum recommended is one with 2GB of vRAM. It's possibly the cause of your problem, but make sure it's drivers are up to date.

I've somehow missed this thread. One of the dangers of posting on old threads.

@Shaun: Need a Windows System Information .NFO file.

@kimmo: need a Resolve log. Assuming you are not using the App Store version, open Finder and navigate to /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve and run CaptureLogs. This will generate a log file on your desktop. It's also helpful to have a Mac System Report .spx file.

Anyone else in this thread with issues, if you are Windows, please post an .NFO file and Resolve log.

If Mac, then a Resolve log and an .spx file.

@Dwaine
Somehow Resolve started working. I did two things:

1.Apple had today an extra update for 10.15.5, I let my Mac do it. Resolve did not start.

2. While trying to get the reports, you asked for, Mac gave error code (-1743) "not authorized to send Apple events to system events" I went to System Preferences’, >Privacy pane >Full disk access and gave CaptureLogs and also Davinci Resolve that permission. And before trying to do these reports, tried to open Resolve, and it started working! So if things stay ok , I don't need to send those reports right now. Thanks for answering!

@Charles
Actually my Mac has total 8GB VRAM memory. Like this: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M, 8 GB GDDR6 memory and also this above mentioned Intel. I don't really understand that.

How do I add the .nfo file if it's too big to attach for this forum and forum won't let me post url's?

Been happening to me with 16 as well. Updated to the latest today but no joy. It will crash at the splash screen most of the time, but sometimes it goes as far as the database and file/open. Sometimes it works just fine. It's about 1 in 7 times I can get it to start though.

Updated Nvidia drivers, uninstalled/re-installed 16.2 as well. Logs attached - any advice would be appreciated.

@Brett: Are you running any of your other heavy apps at the same time as Resolve?

If you have any USB or BlueTooth peripheral devices connected, other than a standard wired USB mouse and keyboard, remove those as a test, and see if that impacts Resolve startup.

@Shaun: Need that NFO file. Place it on a file sharing site and provide a link to it.

If the system still won't let you post URLs, then put a space in the URL so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Thanks Dwaine. Nothing else running.

There was a USB hard drive plugged in, but disconnecting that made no difference. Right now I can't get Resolve to launch at all again.

OK. Just want to double check: The NFO looks like there could be a USB Audio device of some sort on the system. So you're sure you don't have USB headphones/microphones or audio I/F connected?

VPNs have been known to cause startup issues. I see you have a NordVPN. If you have a way to temporarily disable that as a test, that would be helpful.

Take the system off the Internet and temporarily disable the Windows Firewall and see if that helps. If so, you may need to add an access rule.

Anything else that might interfere with network ports on the system could cause an issue. Open a PowerShell in Admin mode and enter the following, and see if that shows anything:

Get-NetTCPConnection | Where-Object { $_.State -eq "Listen" -and $_.LocalPort -eq 1144 } | ForEach-Object { (get-process -id $_.OwningProcess).Description }

It should return nothing. If it returns something, that something is possibly blocking Resolve access to a TCP port it needs.

And speaking of TCP ports, some people have found their DynamicPortRange have been restricted by something, and this can also block Resolve from a TCP port it needs. Do the following to ensure the normal default TCP range, in a Admin level PowerShell:

netsh int ipv4 set dynamicportrange protocol=tcp startport=49152 numberofports=16384

Hopefully one of these things is helpful.

Re: Resolve 16 Studio won't start at all

I am in fact running a second PC monitor created by Huion that allows me to draw on the screen. Occasionally I have to switch my audio from trying to come out of the Huion screen back to my speakers.

I'll give the suggestions you gave a try and get back to you, but in the meantime it seems that if I install the win64_24.20.100.6286 driver Davinci Resolve is able to startup afterwards, but not before.

So it looks like this. I startup my computer, double click the app. Nothing happens. Then I double click on the igxpin file in the win64_24.20.100.6286 driver update suggested by Adobe Premiere. Then even if I don't restart the computer after updating the driver, then when I double click on the Davinci Resolve app it starts up no problem.

yep, just a couple of cables for disconnected devices, but the only audio I/O is a speaker that uses a speaker jack. I unplugged the unused cables anyway.

It was not actively running, but disabling the background service did not seem to help anyway.

This returned nothing as expected.

That may have done the trick - R16 has started 3-4 times in a row now. It seems like a pretty slow startup, but it works. I'll keep an eye and see if it seems stable now. Thank you for all the help!

Hi Folks.

I'm having the same problem with DaVinci Resolve 16.2.2 not opening on my brand new Ryzen 4000 / GeForce RTX 2060 laptop. Updated the Nvidia Studio drivers, disabled firewall, reinstalled DaVinci Resolve and still no luck. It just disappears after 'Looking for Control Surface'. I also tried the compatibility troubleshooter but that did not make any difference.

The laptop is an ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (FA506IV) with 16 GB RAM and two M.2 drives, the one for video files is a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB M.2 drive. I plan on upgrading to more RAM later.

I've attached my DxDiag and CaptureLog files in the hope that someone can help :)

Thanks!

Need a Windows System Information .NFO file, not dxdiag.

I've tried all of the suggestions, but not sure why Davinci Resolve still won't load until after I re-install the driver. Do I really need to re-install the driver each time I restart my computer?

Ok, I read another thread where it was mentioned that you should keep Resolve on the system drive. I had it on a separate drive (with all my other programs). After removing it from there, and reinstalling Resolve 16.2.2 it opened on the very first try! :O

How come Resolve does not work when installed on a different drive? Just curious. And this might help others as well - didn't know that could be a problem.

All programs like Resolve are designed to be installed on the system drive where they place various components in different locations. Something that cannot happen if you install it on another drive.
Resolve Studio 18.6.6 build 7
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo 860 SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (546.01 Studio Driver), Win10 Home (22H2), Speed Editor, Faderport mk1, Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ GW2270 + Samsung SA200, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

Ugh, same problem. I even updated to the current form of Windows. Compatibility mode isn't working for me on Windows 8, otherwise, I would turn my project into a premiere file until things get sorted out.

I am not able to start Resolve as well. It is stuck at "Looking for Control Panel". Is this a physical device that it's looking for? Because I don't have any installed. I thought it was the latest Windows update that is causing the problem, but it's not as I tried it on a different computer with the same update and it works. Anyone facing this problem? And any possible solution?

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

We had the same problem.

It turned out that the PostGreSQL DB file was corrupted.

We started the DaVinci Resolve Project Server and used the "Optimize" function.

After that, DaVinci Resolve started again.

Your laptop is not really adequate to run Resolve.

The graphics drivers are from 2017. And that's the latest available on the Lenovo support site.

You can try updating to a new Intel driver to see if that might make the Intel Graphics 500 GPU work, but it's not likely to work.

The AMD R7 M360 might work with a newer driver. But probably not.

And your 8GB of system RAM is not really adequate, although that would not stop Resolve from running to some degree.

Thank you for your recommendation. Initially I installed it on to laptop and it worked at the time. I even installed it on a lower spec system. I must have got lucky to have it work the first time. I realize the performance issue I may encounter. Like rendering.

So the issue is with the GPU not able to initialize properly for the program?

Yes, the current issue is that it doesn't even see the AMD GPU.

It's trying to initialize openCL on the Intel GPU and failing.

So perhaps a newer Intel graphics driver would help.
