All videos black after installing Resolve 16

I have been using Resolve 15 for about 3 months. I upgraded? to Resolve 16 and now all my video clips and thumbnails are black. Audio track is there and seems right, but just a stream of black for every clip. When I render anything, it just gives me a solid green screen. Is there a setting or something I'm missing.

Does it happen with specific projects? Can you post the logs and projects please?
Do you have render cache ON?

Please review - viewtopic.php?f=21&t=71894

No, it happens with all projects. Old projects and new with freshly imported video.

I attempted to attach the logs, but the forum software is not letting it go through for some reason. If you provide an email address, I can send the logs and the project I am currently working on.

I had render cache off, but after reading your post, I tried it in "Smart" mode and no luck.

I am using Resolve version 16.0.0B.017
I am using Windows 10/64
Running an AMD FX8350 Processor with 32MB RAM, Radeon RX580 GPU

I believe I am having the same issue. And I saw someone else on the boards report the same. All appear to be ATI Video cards..specifically the RX570/RX580 so far from what I see

Tried a full Windows 10 re-install and fresh up to date drivers too.

Diagnostic logs.

Windows 10 with AMD RX580.
I installed the latest graphics drivers (Radeon Adrenalin 19.4.1).
A restart of Resolve fixes the problem most of the times.

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

Here are my logs and system info:
dropbox [dot] com/sh/rs4vwfppqopjj01/AABDaVlHZGl8o-vniOOcF6PXa?dl=0

Good thing I checked the .nfo-file before sending - the first one was in Finnish. :D I changed my system language and now it seems to be in English.

Try the Radeon 19.3.2 driver, instead of your current 19.4.2 driver.

@Greg: Remove the 5870 card and connect the display(s) to the GTX980 card. If the GTX980 is not Mac EFI BIOS flashed, you won't see the first part of the boot up process, but as soon as macOS kicks in, the display should work.

The first run had the same issue..but after re-starting Resolve it appears to be working now. Will test more tonight.

Edit:
Nope. Decided to just try again... and all corrupted thumbnails and black viewports again.

Thank you.

Justin,

To check if it has something to do with the hardware. could you try turning off "Decode H.264/H.265 using hardware acceleration" ?

If that shows a difference, could you grab and link a Windows system info file for us?

Thanks
Shrinivas

I created an empty project and added a generated solid color. No display.

Turned off Decode... It showed up... added a piece of GH5 footage.. it worked.... then checked the box again... no longer works, as expected. Excellent... unchecked the box...still doesn't work... created new project... still doesn't work... rebooted.. still doesn't work. So now either way..box checked/unchecked it displays nothing.

Just went back in to project try and backup the project to send to you..and with it unchecked, it's working. Will continue to see if it is stable without the Decode box checked.

Edit:
Just crashed the video drivers.

Wasn't there a benefit to having a dedicated card for resolve and a separate card for the os? Or has that functionality been removed? Or is it a settings change?

There is not much benefit, with a decent GPU.

And that GUI card actually is a detriment to Resolve performance.

I've been having the same issue with various camera sources, one big difference to the previous posters, I'm on MacOS.

The first time it happened was when I was playing about with some CineDNG stacks, restarted the resolve seemed to cure it for a bit. Currently seeing random blackouts but doesn't seem to be consistent, or dependant on which camera source of codec.

Just got a notification of new drivers for AMD... 19.4.3. So far they have worked the best for me. The only crash I got was on a clip I tried to stabilize. And this time at least I got a Problem Report for DaVinci Resolve pop up request. When I re-opened, the stabilize worked.

I have the same problem. I'm using a rx590 GPU, 2700x cpu,& windows 10 pro . I did a clean install of windows installed the latest drivers, no luck, uninstalled with DDC, and then installed almost every one from 19.1.1 on up. Still no luck. Super frustrating, considering I built this pc just for Resolve..

Update: OK I installed AMD driver 19.4.1 and deleted my non working project and created a new one and it's working right now.... Hopefully when the "official" version is released these bugs will be fixed. Mark.

Im having this exact same problem. Running an RX 580. Restarting it only worked twice out of the many many times. If I leave the pc and come back to it say 10 minutes after, the pc freezes and I have to restart. What gives? will try driver 19.4.1 as suggested.

EDIT: NO such luck with the older driver. Is this a Resove v16 only issue or has it happened with v15 also?

I have been having the same issue, windows 10 running a rx 570. Everything seems to work fine if I install resolve 15 but in resolve 16 all thumbnails show video noise and the monitor shows notyhing but black video. Curious to see what the fix ends up being.

This looks like an AMD driver issue. Can you see what version you have, try the latest, if that doesn't work report the specific ones you tested.

I experience similar woes with rx 580 and 19.6.2 in windows 10. Fuji x-t3 h 265 footage as well as xavc or GH5 footage, all 10-bit, play well (i.e. real time, no glitches) hw decoded in r16, but other h265 media either generate indestinctive multicolor pattern or media offline then usually crash Resolve ( example: those Exodus and Life of Pi or official Samsung HDR mp4 demos)... Also, a Sony h265 HDR demo does play, but colors are weird with purple squared blotches. Of course all those files play great hw decoded in a stand-alone player...

Also it takes a long time between loading a project and showing video in the viewer, sometimes crashing Resolve.

Any news on this one? Out of nowhere the thumbnails started to go haywire but the playback at least worked. Suddenly it's impossible to play anything on my device in Resolve. Tried Beta 2 3 4, Drivers 19.1.1, 19.4.x 19.5.2., 19.6.2.
The 16 Beta ran so well on my PC, if there is any workaround or update on this please let us know, I need to finish this project and I don't want to dig out an Intel/Nvidia Workstation for ther last 10%.

Sorry, must correct myself, my claim above was misleading, the 10-bit XAVC and GH5 footage which are h.264, are not HW decoded...

Hi David, did you do anything to solve the issue? I highly recommend you to prepare for possibly moving your project until this is fixed. I've had the same issue, it went away at first but now I can't use Resolve 16 AT ALL, after rebooting had solved the issue at first. Now have to use a workstation somewhere else, move the whole project there just because I couldn't edit anymore on my personal rig.

Hi,

i have the same issue with a brand new RTX 2060 Nvidia card.
I created a fusion output for an animation under former GPU AMD RX 560 and yesterday i upgraded my GPU to nVidia RTX2060. All imported clips are black/blank.

I tried to relink them but without success. Resolve relinks them hardly even if it says it can find them on the same directory as before.

I just updated DaVinci Resolve 16 to 16.1.1.

Is there a way to relink/refresh clips in media panel successfully ?
now nothing play in my animation as it is empty. Even a single image (not a mov or video) is not displayed.

regards

Install NVIDIA Studio driver 431.86.

Look at clips in the Media page Media Storage area. If you select clips there, are they black in the Viewer?

Hi Dwaine,

in fact here it is what i have installed as drivers:
Image

In fact, since i reinstalled Resolve 16.1.1, when i import my drp file project...it's like an empty project while project was closed to be finished.

it shows no more clips in Media tab, as the whole animation in fusion tab disappeared.
in Fusion tab, i have 6 merges with different text animations and images... a lot of keyframes.... everything is gone :( while my drp file is about 9.3kB

I really do not understand the app behavior :(

Before i reinstalled resolve 16.1.1, all clips were black in media tab, animation boxes were visible but animation itself was not displayed. That's why i wanted to reinstall resolve 16.1.1

This thread is Windows focused.

Can't really help you with Ubuntu related issues, as that's not a distro we support.

Might be worth posting something in this thread, where there are other Ubuntu users who might have suggestions:

Hello am a 1st time visitor,
recently started to use DaVinci Resolve and love it.

But also recently and suddenly imported video files show up as 'no video'.
Video and audio are there, play just fine, but Resolve displays them as audio only.
Kind of 'stay black' issue, too?

System: Windows 10 Pro, Nvidia Geforce GT 1030, driver version: 436.15

Any help greatly appreciated.

Merry Christmas, all!

Kind Regards
sereshk

Some video formats that were supported in the free version of Resolve prior to version 16, are no longer supported in the free version of 16. This seems likely to be your issue.

If you can provide a link to a sample file which is behaving this way for you, we can verify.

Hello,
I think I found the problem, at least to some extent, perhaps you can confirm this?

I changed the file extension from .mkv to .mov
I also noticed (after I posted here) that there was an error message on import saying something about the file not matching project settings.

Which was partly true:
  • resolution was fine = same
  • but frame rate of video was 25.000 fps, project: 30.000 fps
FYI, for all occasional editors who are wondering: I used a simple free transcoder 'Vidcoder' (based on Handbrake, in turn based on ffmpeg libraries, AFAIK)
to convert the frame rate, (2nd case I even used AviSynth frame server and VirtualDub), and now I can use the videos fine.

Is there a specs. page online or in the PDF guides somewhere, I may have missed? Although only fairly recently started doing some creative editing, I have edited digital video for over 15 years and am pretty knowledgable about formats.

Thanks! Great software! Fine forum!

You can't just rename mkv to mov, it's still mkv with mov extension and Resolve doesn't support it AFAIK. Can you be more precise about what you did? Or did you mean that you re-wrapped from mkv to mov in another software?

It is normal that Resolve warns about frame rate mismatch. You needn't have converted the frame rate, you just had to change the Resolve timeline frame rate when you were prompted.

Me too!
This is absurd. I've been telling everyone who will listen about this amazing software and how I've jumped over from Vegas Pro (after 20 years!) and now I'm having the same issue as so many others all without a solution, it seems.
I've completed a few projects already in the last month and now, out of nowhere, the media pool has black clips, the timeline won't play (spacebar does nothing) and moving the playhead over the clip shows nothing in the preview. Audio plays (and spacebar works) in the Fairlight page.
Restarted Reslve, restarted computer and the clips in the timeline (on the edit page) show the thumbnail in the timeline, but nothing in the preview and nothing will play.
Normally with problems you can pinpoint something and find a logical solution, but at the moment it looks like I just lost 2 days work and have to start again.
