GPU Memory Full - Not Fixed in beta 2

PostTue May 07, 2019 10:12 am

I tried a project which I had successfully rendered in 15 with the new version 16B2.
After a few seconds, GPU error appeared!
I also did a system reboot.

I had to go back to version 15 because I could not render a Fusion clip with ACES Color Science applied to the project. It would keep crashing and crashing with that GPU error, also I noticed that my RAM maxed out all the time, I have 64 GB.
Also noted that GPU's would stop working and then CPU to 100%, then after 15 seconds it would go back rendering. I was on version 3 of the BETA 16, I tried everything mostly, Downloaded new Video drivers, gaming drivers, creative driver, went down to Resolve 16 BETA version 2 and 1 with no luck.
I'm back rendering good in ACES in version 15.
Don't know if this is an ACES issue, I did not render on normal Davince YRGB color science.
I'll wait till Beta is over...
Also make sure you backup you projects and database before new Install !

Still getting GPU Memory Full in beta 3 but a lot less frequently, and Resolve continues to do what it's doing (rendering, for example) even with the error message.

Interesting - for the Quadro drivers, version 430.39 posted the following fix:

[NVS 810][Poolmon][Mosaic]: Memory leak is reported when running the application
using Mosaic mode

Does anyone know if Resolve 16 using this 'Mosaic mode'?

The latest version is 430.64 which has a security update, apparently. This are both in the main 430 U2 branch of nVidia driver code. This from nVidia:

"Release 430 is an ‘Optimal Drivers for Enterprise’ (ODE) branch release. ODE branches are dedicated to long term stability, ideal for use by Independent Software Vendor (ISV) certifications, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), and Enterprise environments"

430.86 was released this week. Installed, but still getting GPU Memory Full. Very frustrating. I hope this is fixed before final release, otherwise it would appear that Resolve has outgrown my 1050ti GPU.

EDIT: I see there's a new driver category, released today. Rather than using Gamer Ready there's a new driver called Studio driver which, among other things:
Applications
Provides the optimal experience for the latest releases of top creative apps, including Autodesk Maya 2019, 3ds Max 2020, Arnold 5.3.1.0, Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve 16, and Daz 3D Daz Studio.

Installing it now.

Is there an equivalent 'Studio' for Quadro cards such as the P4000?

edit - I don't see an equivalent on nVidia's site - perhaps they will release an update shortly. I do see that as of May 27 2019 they have released the 430.86 U3 driver for the Quadro line.

Do not use 430.64: it is buggy

It is necessary to use 430.86 Nsd or Grd. It fixes an issue for poor feedback to the calling application.
(Nsd only if your GPU support it)

My point is that the distinction between drivers that you folks are talking about does not apply to Quadro cards, only to the gaming cards such as the 2080 Ti and the 1080 Ti (and the others you mentioned).

If you search for Quadro cards, you will find the 430.86 U3 driver for Quadro but there is no separate designation for 'Nsd' and 'Grd' (or 'Studio').

Hey Jean Claude - Count me out on this discussion. I didn't realize that the discussion of GPU memory full was restricted to whatever it is you want to call the GeForce cards you use. For me, the Quadro is necessary for other programs and while it is not as powerful as the more recent GeForce cards it suits my needs.

No worries for me :) . I know that if you use Media composing for example: that's important (I still have an Avid perpetual license) but we're here with Davinci Resolve.

Just to clear things up a bit, "Studio" drivers didn't exist before today, in fact it wasn't even listed this morning when I went to update my drivers. I went back about a half hour later to check what the version number was on the latest driver, and it was then that I saw the Studio drivers listed. It has the same version number as the Gamer Ready driver (430.86)

I also noticed that, unlike the last update, this one doesn't mention that it's uninstalling the previous driver, so if you're finicky about that stuff you many want to uninstall your previous driver before installing the latest one.

Hello Steve,

Thanks for watching the pdf:
430.86-win10-nsd-release-notes.pdf

page 26 for the P4000, the reference is present (and other quadro).

It's up to you to test if the driver is compatible with your other applications.

Hope this help. :)

me too... for example going to deliver page to render sometimes it gives GPU memory full error. But then, restarting Resolve and going directly to delivery where the error happened, without doing anything else, fixes the problem and renders ok. It is as if memory is cleaned somehow by restarting. That is an indication of some memory being leaked somewhere while working.

The first test with 16 Public Beta 4 (16.0B.033) works fine!
Thanks for the good work!

Sometimes I have performance problems with coloring and nodes with OPENFX. Then I kill the resolve task and can continue working again.

A ready cutted project without color grading and sound effects with 1920x1080 29.97 fps can not be played in the best quality. The presentation freezes or wobbles! Unfortunately not usable!
With version 15 everything runs fluently in the best quality!

Hello,

Geforce 1050 Ti Mobile has 4 GB VRAM. Not very high

If the TL resolution is higher than HD it will become very complicated for you, if in addition the clip is GH5 10 bits: even more complicated. And if you do not have the Studio version, ie without hardware decoding: very, very complicated.

Target TL resolution : HD for test. :?
