codec question: PAL DV and GH5 files do not play in R16

PostTue May 21, 2019 7:35 am

HI everyone,

I am new in the forum and haven't found an answer to my questions in this forum yet (only older answers (1-2 years)).

I have a bunch of old SD files in PAL DV codec
and also some new GH5 files.

Nether of these files are playing in R16 beta 2 on Windows10 64bit.

What I found out so far.
- PAL DV is very old and not supported on Windows. The only way seems to be to re-render everything.
Is that correct and why is Pal DV supported under MAC and not under Windows.
If there really is no way, could someone give me a re-converter suggestion?

- GH5 files. Probably it is the issue, that these are 10bit files. I cannot verify that (Mediainfo does not help to find that out). It seems that R16 studio will most likely play all GH5 files. I this correct as well?

I would really appreciate some new answers, because I hope something has changed in the last few years and since R14.

Regards

Hi everybody,

shortly after I posted this question I found a solution for the PAL DV files.

Here is the link:
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=77744

Summary and SOLUTION from Fols2018:
.......
I'd recommend Adobe Media Encoder (ACE) for anyone at beginner level. After you transfer all MiniDV tapes to computer, Download a free 7 day trial of Adobe Media Encoder. The trial has no restrictions or limitations. Put all the AVI video files in a common folder. Batch process all the AVI files using QUICKTIME/REWRAP profile to create xxx.MOV videos. REWRAP reportedly produces better quality than TRANSODING.
I tried it and it really works. Resolve has no problems with the through ACE created mov files.

I still would like to know, if anybody has problems with 10bit GH5 files in Davinci Studio 15/16

Thanks and bye

Re-wraping doesn't make better quality it simply keeps original quality, while transcoding in most cases reduces it (how much depends on used codec).
You can create reference MOV files for AVI DV sources with QT7 PRO as well. This will also work in Resolve.

Hello.

You need Resolve Studio to play 10 bit files.

I found a workaround, import to FCP, export in the format you need.... bingo, it works

If you are on a Mac, the free version can play 10 bit H.264/265 on the new M1 machines.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

are you saying we can't import 4K 10bts 422 MOV VLOG footage from a GH5 camera into Resolve free version? I just purchased CineMatch to work with another camera. Please let me know. Thanks

I'm saying that it's easy to test :)
But yes, on windows you need Studio to read 10 bit h264 files.

Even on MacOS there are some limitations regarding supported codecs in free.
C'mon, you can afford a MacPro and not Studio?

This... does not seem to be correct to me. I have 2 PCs here and tons of DV PAL material from my Digital 8 Camera and I can import all the AVI Files fine to DR 16 and 17 on one PC and play it without any issues on the other PC too.
Since I have no Video Editing Tools on the 2nd PC (Windows 10) and it can still play these files like they come out of the Camera / Firewire, I am pretty sure I never installed some kind of codec. The files play in Windows Media Player, Film & TV App in Windows 10 and VLC (which has its own codecs AFAIK).

And as far as I know Resolve also comes with its own set of Codecs internally, so at least importing the files into Resolve should not make a difference on my system and your system.

Do you get error messages when importing the files or what is the issue?

Here is a Mediainfo Dump of one of my files, maybe you can spot a difference. I usually transfer the DV files from my Digital 8 Camera via Firewire and Scenalyzer Live or WinDV into a Type 2 DV AVI file. I did not try Type 1 yet I think.
