Blanking fill does not work with transitions (SOLVED)

PostThu May 30, 2019 3:46 pm

Hi just want to let you know, that there is an issue with blanking-fill (OFX) when using it in a transition.
The background keeps being empty till a transition has finished.
Any way to fix it - so the filled background fades with the transition, too?

Can you add it on the edit page and make it a compound clip and test?

Ah interesting - i didn´t know that i can add this effects on the edit page, too!
This worked!

Making it a compound is required when using openFX from the colorpage. That is working, too.

Thank you!

Would be great if "dynamic zoom" would affect blanking fill, too ;)

Isse came back: Blanking fill does not work with transitions

PostMon Jul 29, 2019 2:04 pm

Hi!
Just want to tell you, that with the actual BETA7 the blankingfill issue came back.
Now it doesn´t matter if you add it in the edit- or color page. When using a transition the blurred background will be cutted.

My suggestion for a workaround: place the tracks on two different tracks, use the blanking fill as needed, then do the transition between the two video tracks. This would be easiest with a simple transition, like a dissolve or fade, but there are ways to do just about anything if you work at it. I've done push-ons and push-offs and it can be done with enough time and determination.

I have created blanking fill manually for years just by placing a copy of the track on top of the other track, then zooming and blurring the border section as required. My memory is that this idea started with the syndicated TV show Entertainment Tonight when they switched to HD in 2008, and they still had a huge 25-year library of 4x3 library content to use as clips. I can recall seeing this and saying, "wow, great idea: use a blurred copy of the clip to fill the 16x9 area," and that quickly became the standard go-to trick for repurposing old footage. (If anybody else did it prior to E.T., my apologies -- but this was the first time I ever saw it.)

Before i knew BlankingFill i did this effect on my own, too.
In combination with DynamicZoom (btw is there a way to switch from zoom out to zoom in?) this is a great effect to add photos into a timeline.

In my case i´ve nearly finished a project using Resolve 16.6 and blanking fill.
I would need to make this effect completely new with 16.7 because it stopped working in that comfortable way. That would take too much time and would not make that fun.

Now, i´ve switched back to 16.6 and hopefully in the next version blanking fill will work with transitions again.

I´d also wish to be able to use transitions on adjustment-layers ;).

Hi All

Davinci Resolve 16.1.1.005 free version

i've been having similar issues when using blanking fill on stills and video

Essentially I was applying BF from the timeline page on an unaltered image/video and all was well, however when any transformation was applied, in my case I was performing an image flip, it stopped working, showing only a black area around the clip.

I have poked around on various forums and found some suggesting that appling BF from the colour edit page solved the problem, however it was not working for me...until

I have found that transformation needs to applied from the colours page

on the colours page select SIZING panel then NODE SIZING the clip can now be adjusted

see image below for the panel in question

also it seems this will work whether the BF has been applied from the edit page or colours page

I think that maybe i've solved the problem (Resolve Free 16.1.2).
I've applied the effect Blankig Fill in the Color page, obtaining the same black bars during cross-fade transitions with other clips (with or without the effect).
To keep it working you need to activate the Alpha Output in the node, and connect all the alpha channels of the nodes to the end.
So (I supposed) Resolve can trace your intention to move the alpha (transparency) informations through the nodes chain.

+1. This works for me too, except you may need to change clip attributes of both the target clip and any overlapping clips to Alpha=pre-multiplied, and the node alpha = OFX alpha. Bit fiddly, but I suppose one could set up a power-grade.

Hello, I was having the same solution and I had tried so many different things but nothing seemed to work. However, I have found a solution that works perfectly, the blanking fill is adaptable and it can be moved and adjusted to suit you perfectly. It also does not glitch out when using transitions etc.

All you need to do is right click on the clip you want to add the fill to (the clip should be blank e.g. no effects already added to the clip). Then right click on the clip and select "New Fusion Clip". Then right click on the fusion clip and select "Open in Fusion Page". Select the Media In node, press Shift+Spacebar then search for blanking fill. You can then move the blanking fill to suit your clip, change the blur / fade you want and also add drop shadow just like normal fill.

Then go back to the edit tab and it should work perfectly, If you have any trouble let me know, or alternatively look up on youtube "Fusion Blanking Fill". I presume something useful would come up.

Cheers X

I´ve got it working in an easy way:
Just add an alpha-output, and a 2nd source to the nodes and it will work.
Sad there were no answer/solution from BMD ;)

I am having the problem you have described. Unfortunately, I do understand the solution of "Just add an alpha-output, and a 2nd source to the nodes and it will work." I have watched some videos on the basics of Fusion but obviously, it is too complicated for a newbie. Are you able to indicate step by step what I should be doing? I am trying to finish this project for a Christmas virtual concert. Everything else I have done works great. The blank fill not working in time with the transition is the only issue I have not solved.
