HDR Drops Out with Title Studio 16 Beta 4

PostSun Jun 09, 2019 1:35 am

I don't know if this is a cockpit problem or a bug. I've been editing along, learning Resolve HDR and doing fine. Today I added a simple title, and when I play the timeline over the title the HDR drops out and the video while the title plays is log like flat. As soon as the play head is past the title, HDR comes back. It's as if the HDR metadata is lost. I tried adding a Fusion title and Resolve crashed. Ideas?

I confirmed that the title function works okay with Studio 15, where I can successfully place titles over HDR video. I did not go back to earlier Studio 16 betas to see if this is a bug introduced in Beta 4.

Also, it looks like there may be the same issue with Beta 4 with video transitions, where HDR drops out during a transition.

I found the same thing with all four Resolve 16 betas, but it has to do with the color space. The Title Generator appears to only work in the Rec.709 color space, and will become washed out in the Rec.2020 color space.

The workaround is to do your time line in Rec.709, Gamma 2.4, and set your Output color space to Rec.2020 Gamma ST2084 1000nit. You will probably also need a 3D Video Monitor LUT to see the correct colors on your monitor. Even if you do not use a monitor LUT, the rendered color output will be correct, e.g., white will be white - not grey, etc.

I agree it is a timeline color space issue with titles. In the meantime I may export projects to FCPX for titles.
