How to know the clip duration in the timeline?

PostSat Jun 29, 2019 4:38 pm

Hello.
...
Is there a way of knowing the clip duration when in the timeline?
In the Premiere - I´m moving from there for good - there is a window called "Info", where we can know the clip duration in the timeline, the duration of the "holes" between clips, among others.
...
Thanks in advance.

It would be nice if hovering over the clip provided duration and full name.... Besides, the Edit index, the other way to do it is mark the clip and check the duration in the program viewer.

I've seen it, now. But, the program viewer is the only place where that information is shown.
...
It was really nice if BlackMagic could manage to work this out. Maybe on "mouse over" and in the index tab as "duration in timeline".
...
That would deliver a better product with a simple move! :-)
...
Thanks for your answers.

Right click on the clip.
Choose "Change clip duration"
The duration is displayed.
Select "Cancel"
If the display showed the info you want on every clip it would be massively distracting when trying to edit.
A readout on the timeline viewer would be better.
At the moment there is timeline duration at the top left of the timeline viewer.
Perhaps next to that would be a good spot to show the duration of the selected clip or have it selectable between timeline duration and clip duration.
I like that idea.

Premiere has done the hover thing for years. It's not at all a distraction, there's a time delay on it, you have to hold the position, and the popup window is small. It virtually never comes up unintentionally, and even if does, no harm.

Nice to know John.
I'd still like to see my method employed as you could then copy the duration into the clipboard and use it elsewhere.
Lets see what 17 brings.

Avid is king here. Two lines of timecode display above both the source and record viewers, with a duration display in the middle. Each line of display can be independently set to show record time, or the timecode from any source on your timeline...V1, V2,V3 A1, A2,A3 etc, or can show in to out duration, or timeline duration. As well you can display times in current frame rate, or converted to different frame rates, which is essential for cutting a 23.976 program, but having to deliver a 30 frame drop frame timecode version.

As well any of this information can be added on a timecode burn window for sending to sound or colour to clarify source location, name and timecode issues. Resolves method of showing record or source timecode, by only displaying the uppermost clip on your timeline is a joke.

Hello,

Everything is online without having to click in all directions.

You just have to move the playhead:
What's in black: it's under the playhead
What's in gray: it's not under the playhead.

I also Avid and by dint of clicking in all directions: I get to have like a tenniselbo on the wrist ... :)

Much better in Avid. The information is where you are looking while you work...at the source and record screens. You don't have to click around at all to see it...its just there.

Resolve has tried implementing a very weak version of timecode information at the moniitor area, but it needs to be vastly improved to be usefull. Nobody wants to be constantly looking over at the bin section to see what the clip on their monitors information is.

Hello, Jean Claude.
...
In your image, there is no Clip Duration. Media In and Media Out. BlackMagic can put there some "Duration in Timeline". It will help.
...
Meanwhile I just workaround it.
...
Nothing too bad, of course.
...
Davinci is a really nice piece of software. Thanks for this BM.

+1 for this please!

This was one of those things that when I switched over from the dark side I thought I was missing something somewhere. Glad to hear I wasn't, but sad to hear there isn't a quick way to do this. Please improve soon!

Looks like the best way to get the info at the moment is with the Mark Clip command. You'll see the clip duration over the Timeline Viewer on the left.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Or you can double click on the clip in the timeline. It will then appear in the Preview window with its duration top left.

In Vegas Pro, there are two options for you to see the clip's duration.
1. A floating window (dockable) which is called 'Show Event Length'
Any selected single clip A or V, the duration will be shown here & update as well if you trim or extend the file.
2. Toggle on/off Event Length
This is embedded in all of the clips in the TL, shown in upper right corner, also update like #1 when you edit them.

I use #2 all of the time, just assign a shortcut to toggle it on/off & you're good.

This feature is very helpful especially b-rolls or even monitoring & dividing multiple duration snippets of interviews to be edited for the purpose of paid airtimes.
For editing music videos also, for us to see how many seconds does that shot is shown or expose to the screen etc..better than needing to press LMB(x2) or ctrl d of each.
Seeing a duration of a clip without even going one by one is a time saver in a situation indeed. Hope resolve will have this.

Not being able to see the clip duration in many ways in timeline is counter productive.

One simple reason out of many:

Trimming the clip, you have to mark the clip each time...

If you left click on either the head or tail of the clip with the trim cursor active, you'll see the duration after you nudge it a bit. You'll need to undo the nudge afterwards, but it's pretty quick.

I do agree that this is a badly-needed feature. In fact, I'd like to see the other program's clip info window somewhere on-screen all the time.

Is this solved yet? I want to know how to view the duration of selected clips quick, one clip or several clips. Anyone know how to do that?

If I select in and out point, the time on the far left (over the track names) still shows the whole project time.

I should be able to simply click on the clip...or multiple clips...and see the duration somewhere ANYwhere in the program, easily. Doing anything more than this is just a waste of my time.

Having to click the handles and drag and then undo just to see the duration, is silly and a waste of my time.

Having to Right click, select Change duration or speed, or even Command + D, is just silly and a waste of my time. Especially considering you then have to close the window.

I need an economy of clicks in my life. This should be an easssssy solution!
