DR 16: Laggy playback on Windows System

Hi,

I am using DR 16 Studio on this system: Windows 10, Intel i7-6700 3,40 GHz with 32 GB RAM and a Geforce GTX 1050 TI with 4GB.

I'm editing H.264 footage shot with an Osmo Pocket directly from the Samsung T5 SSD. I have also already created optimized media and set playback at quarter resolution.

Yet playback is still laggy.

Have checked disk speeds which are fine, GPU and CPU are never above 20% usage, RAM is also never above 30%.

The little info on top of the playback window in Resolve says its playing back at 50 FPS, but it is not. Video sometimes stops altogether, while the sound choppily plays on.

Have also fully uninstalled 16, gone back to 15.3, still the same problem. Now have uninstalled 15 and installed the latest version of 16, still the same problem.

Have also enabled CUDA and set the graphics card manually, still no luck.

Running out of things to try. Any other suggestions?

Thanks so much!

I have now transcoded the footage to ProRes using the Adobe Media Encoder. Have opened a new project and imported the files, playback is still laggy.

Premiere Pro on the same systems is playing the original files back just fine. Must be a Resolve problem....

I’ve read your Facebook thread. difficult to guess the issue so lots to check....

Just checking, you definitely have the studio version installed?
What is the exact version of the Resolve Studio software?
What is the exact version of the nvidia GPU drive installed?

these are h.264, UHD res, 50fps source clips?
What is the exact res of the source clip.
Is your timeline the exact same res?

If you delete all the cache, save, restart, add the new cache drive to your drive list in preferences, save, restart. Then set the cache drive to a internal system disk, save, restart, does this retain the cache drive?

If you render HD dpx files, do these play at 50fps?
If not, at what speed?
How many UI monitors are connected? If more than one remove all but one and see what that does.
Sorry for so many questions...you might want to also generate diagnostic logs and post a link to that and the Windows NFO file.

Hi Peter,

it's Studio version 16.0.0.044

The Nvideo Driver is the studio driver Version 430.86

I have now opened a new project and imported just one file (50 fps, HD res) put it in the timeline and it plays back choppily.

I have two monitors connected and used both. now reduced to one, still laggy.

have to go now but will try to generate a diagnostics log tomorrow. and maybe even a screencap of playback and system performance.

thanks!

Have you got "Play all Video Frames" selected? Click on the top right 3 dots on the Edit page. No problems here with HD or UHD h264 50fps playback, but I do have 2gb more VRAM.

Ok, overnight I have encoded all the files of the project to ProRes (HD, 24 fps) at the same framerate (the clips were from different cameras and had different frame rates, which I only noticed later). I have also turned on "Play all video frames".

The result is slightly better but still nowhere near the performance I would expect. It keeps going down to about 16 fps during playback and still stuttering.

Running pretty smoothly on the color page now with half resolution. only a tiny lag at the beginning of each clip, but definitely workable....

I was researching a similar issue but that last sentence caught my eye. I had that too. It turned out that it's the "selection follows playhead" option that screw things up for me. I got nearly perfect playback when I turned it off.

My guess is that if it's on, Resolve has to read a bunch of metadata at the start of each clip. This extra work seems like it should be neglible but evidently it is not.

I know this thread is a bit old, but maybe it will help someone?

My Davinchi resolve is really laggy too. Its actually doing my head in and can not fixgure it out.

My specs
Windows 10
Davinchi Resolve Studio - 16.2.2.001 Licenced
Processor AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16 Core 3.40GHz
64GB RAM
AORUS GEFORCE 2080RTX

What I have done so far:
Optimised Media - DNxHR SQ
Render Cache Format - DNxHR SQ
Enable background Cache after 1 Second
Render Cache Fusion output - ON
Render Cache Colour Output - ON
Camera I shot with BMPCC4K - RAW 4K 60fps

If anyone knows what I am doing wrong please let me know.

All the render is blue on the timeline but still plays back laggy. I have contacted Black Magic but have not heard back yet. My system should be running it fine, so its most likely me doing somthing wrong or davinci resolve should go in the bin & I go back to Final Cut Pro x

Answerof : Laggy playback on Windows System in Davinci 16

Please uncheck all option in "Optimized Media and Render Cache"
It will solve the laggy playback issue.
Thanks

I too am having the same lag problem as everyone else. I have watched numerous youtube videos, read forums and articles regarding the issue, applied EVERY "solution" and I cannot get rid of the lag. I'm using H.264 1080p (not 4k/8k) video shot from a Samsung S20.
So far I have:
-Generated Optimized media
-changed proxy mode to user
-deleted ALL render cache
-Optimized media format and render cache to DNxHR SQ
-Enabled background checking after '1' second
-show all video frames
-set proxy mode to user
-restarted my computer
-render cache color output
-reinstalled DaVinci studio
-and probably a few other things that i forgot

Nothing changes.
I am using a brand new ASUS zenbook
10th gen intel core i7-10510U CPU @1.8GHz 2304MHz 4 core, 8 logical processors
16GB ram
nvida geforce GTX 1650 with Max-Q design
DaVinci Version 16.2.7010

I never had this issue with the last two videos I've made but now, it's nothing but lag that I can't get rid of. I am at a complete loss. Somebody please help me. I can't afford Adobe.

Hey everyone,

I am having the same issue. I edited a couple videos from my gopro without problem. Then, one day, I go to start a new project and all of a sudden there's lag. There's lag when I just watch the clips in the media pool and when I add them to the timeline. I reinstalled Resolve twice but that didn't help. I checked my system performance and it's nowhere near max capacity.

I shot in 60 fps and the playback fps says it's playing at 60 fps but that is not true.

I tried using optimized media but even after generating it, the playback is just as laggy. As mentioned higher, the only lagless playback is in the color tab.

I tried the two solutions posted here but they didn't help.

If your video files are 60fps h264 that takes CPU resources to decode and play. In the Edit page it will skip frames to keep up with the CPU even though the frame rate is shown as 60fps. You could enable Show All Video Frames which may improve playback but at the expense of audio reproduction. You could also try using a half or quarter resolution Proxy whilst editing.

JTBullfrog, have you updated your GPU driver? No problems here with Nvidia driver 456.38.

Thank you, "Show all video frames" finally solved it. It's weird because I didn't have to do that a couple months ago. Do you happen to know why this changed?

Is your GPU driver up to date?

Yes it is.

With "show all video frames" enabled, the footage is played back at roughly 50 fps. Is there a way to keep it at 60? Also generating optimized media and using the proxy modes does nothing.

In case this helps anyone else, I had the same problem and updating my GPU driver seems to have solved it.

Playback was excellent, no problems, then suddenly (possibly when I updated to 16.2.8.005 but I'm not certain that that was the origin) playback was horrible and skipping non-stop, even if I cached the clip or selected show every frame.

Updated my GPU driver and all seems to be well now. Playback was around 11fps and is now back to 29.97.
