Text box for long text

PostMon Jul 29, 2019 5:22 pm

Hi there,
I've been looking everywhere for an option to add a long text in DavinciResolve but I haven't found any. I see no tutorial about it, nor an option for it.
I make videos every week in which the presenter quotes from different sources, and I need to put on screen those texts. Usually a whole paragraph every 3 or 4 minutes. I don't want to be breaking manually the sentences every time I need to add a quote.
Does anyone know a simple way to do it? Not just for one time, but a dozen of times in every video?
Thank you very much

Create a Word document that will automatically apply the necessary word-wrap/breaks, type it there and then Copy/Paste.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Like Jim above says, easiest way to do a text block, beats typing into inspector, and I'm not aware of any limits, but if that's not the answer you want you might have to be a bit more specific - how do you want to display your text? Scrolling, news ticker, closed captions, overlay? There probably are tutorials for each of those.

Hi Again...

I REALLY do not see how that works... I dropped a TEXT (not TEXT+) onto the timeline and it says "Title."

Formatted 2 paragraphs in Word, Copy then pasted into the Box on the Inspector. Text runs right off the sides.

Thanks!
Thank you!

Actually fairly simple. I need to display a disclaimer that fits into the safe zones. It has a header and text. Runs about 3 paragraphs. Static... for about 6 seconds.

+1 on this request - spent 30 mins today assuming that this must be possible in DR - just need it for a legal disclaimer. Had to use 3 text boxes overlayed on each other.

Honestly cant believe something as basic as a usable text box isnt in DR at this point. Unbelievable. Also whoever set the scale on the text size has clearly never checked to see what a 4000 size word looks like on screen... Dont worry, theres also no way to keyframe the size or anything usable like that.

There's been lots of progress in text with Resolve, but a text box would make me super happy.

+1 For this! I hate to be that guy, but it seems crazy to me that a text box doesn't exist. Text in general is better than Premier, I think, because it defaults to center and you can anchor it in logical ways. But for longer text, it runs off the edge forcing you to (1) decide your font size first and then (2) make manual line breaks. And if you change your mind about the font size, you have redo the line breaks.

I was messing around and discovered that you can slightly alter the shape and length of a text box using the Crop tool. It's not much, and I wish DaVinci would update this feature, but I was able to use it to fit a source all on one line!

I'm using this work-around:

Open a LibreOffice (or Word/word processor document)
Write the text and wrap/format as you see fit.
Export it as a png with high resolution (like 200 maybe).
Import this png into your project's media pool.
Put this png into your timeline.
For black text, just set the composite mode (blend mode) in the inspector to "Multiply".
For white text, go to OpenFX, grab invert color and place onto the png in the timeline, and then select "Screen" for the blend mode.

This is ridiculous. Any programme that cannot do this simple thing is driving me nuts and I'm just thinking the programmers need to be fired and I need to be in charge of the re-hiring!
That's just another issue in a long list of Davinci Resolve, poorly designed ****. It's a basic necessity of film making to add a disclaimer. That's going to be a long winded text, that needs to be there, and not ******* off screen you alleged Programmers! God sake sort it out before we all die of boredom.

One of the things I found strange (coming from Vegas) was the lack of support for text overlays, scrolling text (ie: for credits/titles) and such.

I guess most video professionals using DR have been using it mainly for color grading and adding their titles/credits using some other software.

The root cause issue here is that DR's heritage and strength comes from the COLOR tab. The EDIT functionality is a recently acquired add in and is FAR from mature with many usability issues.
I would gladly pay for updates if BMD implemented usability studies and refined the user interface.
I curse at the Editing glitches and stupid annoying issues every time I edit.
Alas..we get what we paid for..as the saying goes.

+1 for text box.

Using (in Fusion) Layout -> Type : Frame, does not wrap the text (it does not go to the next line).

All

I gather from this thread that there is as yet no way to get Text Scrolls to automatically wrap wide and long text.

I agree that this is such a basic need and sadly it is not supported.

I was planning to use a Scroll Text in a Video Newsletter. I can create the formatted text through various methods - if I could understand what I need to do?

Here is test video so you can get an idea of what I am trying to do with the Scrolling Text.
In this test, I manually adjusted the Text Block contents, with line feeds, so each line shows up in full.

Is there a reliable way to know and set the width? Clearly font size is involved here.
I assume I have to add hard return at the end of each line
I want to automate this and can certainly write custom code outside of DVR, but
Hopefully, want to write/use a LUA function - if someone can point me to a scripting idiom for reading and processing an external file contents in the pre-render script area.

Thanks in advance.

Sri.

P.S. The file processing idiom will be a great help for lots of other things as well. For example music visualization. For example processing Music and generate Audio Statistics and using them for driving parameter values in DVR. Right now, audio visualization seems to be limited to just Volume!! at least what I have seen in the examples.

+1 to at least let us enlarge the text box, at the moment you cannot see where the line breaks are and the text you put in even if it is a small sentence.

I was working on re-doing the subtitles of a movie, i have the original on my screen and typing away the new one and I cannot see the simple 2 lines subtitles.

another idea is to have the text box go in "text mode overlay" where you type directly on the screen (like photoshop does)

Here is a Solution you can use. Just tested and works nicely.

This method uses Notepad++ , which works only on Windows.

If you are not using Notepad++
it is a free, ease to get going, and very powerful editor.
It is worth downloading and installing it just for this work alone.

Download link is:
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/

Preparing Text for Text-Scroll in DVR.
It is actual pretty trivial, but laying out the steps explicitly makes it look long. Fear Not.

Step1:
Bring the text file into Notepad++.
You can also use Notepad++ for creating the text.

Step2:
You are going to use Find/Replace on the file.

Step3:
Menubar->Search->Replace

Step4:

Enter the following for the Find String

^(.{30,45})\s

Here 30 is the minimum width at which split will occur.
Scanning will start at character 30 and
proceed until it finds a space for
wrapping and inserting a line feed.
If it cannot find a space, for example long URLs
it will not split the line, and you will have to
deal with it manually.

Step5:

Enter the following for the Replace String

\1\n

Step6:

Select Regular Expression and
Replace All.

Step 7:

You will see that file has been properly wrapped
with linefeeds at the right width.

Step 8:

Select All
Copy and then
Paste the copied text into
DR Text Scroll Area

Now check the behavior of Text Scroll.

Step9

On the Note Pad, use UNDO
to restore the Original Text
So you can redo again with different Widths
try out different values for 30,45 in step5 until
you get the best results with Text Scroll in DR.

Enjoy Sri.

It supports text wrapping, simple Pango text markup, scrolling for long text (and animate it).
I can say it is virus-free, but I do not know how to prove it.

that looks great sergey... many thanks.

could you please explain installing the ofx (windows) please.

you might like to add a 'read me' note in the bundle to explain its installation too ;-)

later that day...

installed but not working - res 16, win 10 pro. other ofx behaving as expected, but your text behaving strangely - no text showing and video below text breaking up to either strange colours, or repeating patterns. will post pic if you require.

here's hoping...

Subtitles support text wrapping, if that's helpful... you can set the max line width in Project settings.

I apologize to everyone I misled. This plugin requires Natron (libraries from it). You need to download it (Portable archive), unarchive it, and add the path to the bin folder to the PATH environment variable.

hi sergey,

thanks for the follow up.

you're explanation 'add the path to the bin folder to the PATH environment variable.' is somewhat confusing?

can not we simply use the installer version on the natron site? if not, could you give precise instructions as to how to install the portable versio in win 10

thanks again for your time and effort...

No, the installer will not work. You need to download and unzip the archive. Then you need any tutorial "How do I set system environment variables in Windows 10". It's easy, just system settings. Add new path to the PATH variable. Something like "C:\Users\m-ser\Downloads\Natron-2.3.15-Windows-64-no-installer\bin" as in my screenshot before.

I'm sorry again. Initially, this bundle was created by the author for Natron, that is, for Fusion in our case. For me, it doesn't work in Edit and works in Fusion. To work in Edit we need a macro-wrapper. I made an example.

This is all too bulky for such a simple task, I understand.
Maybe someone could adapt these plugins for Resolve. But this has not happened in recent years.

A workaround on the Mac would be to get the BBEdit text editor from the Mac App Store. This will be a 30-day evaluation copy, but it continues to work -- without some advanced features -- after the evaluation period and this is a planned free version. (They used to have a separate free tool called Text Wrangler, but have discontinued it.)

1. Enable View -> Text Display -> Soft Wrap Text -> At Window Width

2. Size the window (width) to a comfortable margin so that your soft wrap looks good. You will hard-wrap the text as a separate step and it is distinct from this soft wrap, so set the soft wrap based on your aesthetics and what you want to work with while typing. (You probably want your soft wrap to be wider than what you ultimately want your lines to be, so that you're not fooled by the soft-wrapping, which is display-only.)

3. Type in your text. This is a good place to keep a whole series of titles to keep them organized. Put blank lines between titles/paragraphs.

4. When you're happy with your text, select it all (CMD-A). Then Text -> Hard Wrap... (CMD-\) and choose how many characters should fit on a line. It breaks at word or punctuation boundaries.

Don't worry if you choose, say, 40 characters and then decide that 30 (or 50 or whatever) characters would work better: you can repeat step 4 with different values and it works properly. Of course, this is based purely on character counts so would work most precisely with fixed-width fonts, so with most fonts, kerning, letter spacing, etc, how many characters fit on a line is more variable. (BBEdit is a programmer's tool.)

The one complication would be if you want to manually insert line breaks in.adjacent lines that you don't want to turn into blank-line-separated paragraphs. BBEdit doesn't track which line breaks you inserted and which it created when you hard-wrapped. The only firewall that stops it from hard-rewrapping all text is the blank lines between paragraphs. Within paragraphs, it essentially totally unwraps and then rewraps. (You can of course only select some text to hard-wrap.)

To be honest, it's better practice to have all of your titles in a separate document anyhow, rather than to depend solely on it existing in scattered Text or Text+ clips/nodes. It provides an archive and can be easily printed or emailed for someone to edit/check. It would be nice to have auto-wrapping in Text/Text+, which would be interactive and take character-sizes into account, but there is a workaround.

Using (in Fusion) Layout -> Type : Frame, does not wrap the text (it does not go to the next line).

Kind regards.

It doesn't wrap, but it does push words/lines to fill the frame you define (as a percentage of the X/Y dimensions of the clip). So you can force the top line of text to be at the top of the frame and the bottom line of text to be at the bottom of the frame.

RCModelReviews wrote:One of the things I found strange (coming from Vegas) was the lack of support for text overlays, scrolling text (ie: for credits/titles) and such.

I guess most video professionals using DR have been using it mainly for color grading and adding their titles/credits using some other software.

Text+ (at least) does support scrolling text. You have to format it line-break-wise manually, but it does support scrolling.

There's a community Fusion Fuse called Text Wrapping that does an OK job of this. It won't by default be available on Edit, but a Fusion Effect could be made to achieve that.

Link to the Text Wrapping Fuse on We Suck Less forum

Unfortunately it's never been made part of the Reactor plugin manager, so it has to be installed manually.

I posted the same link to this thread 2 years ago Tom... it didn't take! ;)
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

My OFX and macro wrapper still work with 17.4.1, but need a clear instruction or installer. :)

Yep! Unfortunately.
It's maddening since my projects deal with so much text, and I love everything about Resolve otherwise.
That's good to know about that tool.
Notepad++ still works the best I think. Just have to resize the window to however long you need it, and get used to hitting ctrl+i or ctrl+j to keep or reset the formatting.
It copies/pastes into Resolve perfectly.

If you're on Mac, crossover has worked flawlessly for me.
