Laptop That Can Edit 8K Video

PostSat Aug 03, 2019 10:33 am

8K is a beast, especially in full resolution. But NVIDIAs RTX Studio Laptop can not only cut full-resolution 8K, it can play it back, too.
RED recently published the API for using REDCODE RAW with NVIDIA RTX Studio, so any company can begin incorporating that support into their workflow. It's really only a matter of time.

This is just a time when GPU is powerful enough to decode 8K Jpeg2000 (without huge effort of crazy code optimisation). In other case we would never get it for free (I assume). You have to pay big $ for good Jpeg2000 GPU based decoding libraries, eg. Comprimato.

You need atleast a RTX2080ti to de- crypte/compress/code and de-bayer 8k.R3D 5:1 24 fps (the standard compression when you need high quality) in real-time, when you also want to de-noise (TNR) you are better of with the $2500 RTX titan X because the 2080ti only has 11 GByte of memory. You still need atleast a R7-3700x or i9-9900k as the CPU.
At the moment there is no NLE that supports .R3D GPU decoding.

With the upcoming(september 2019) R9-3950x($750) + Radeon VII($700) you can not only handle 8k.R3D 5:1 24 fps in real-time but also speed up other tasks and other codecs and it's a cheaper more versatile solution.

8k.R3D 22:1 30/60 fps can be de- everythinged with a R5-3600($200) + RX VEGA 64($400) in real-time.

I think this is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. There are a lot of things in life that fall into the category of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." Trying 8K on a Laptop is one of them.

It's just more Nvidia PR hype how great they are (as AMD is pushing hard on them). In reality it's not so easy and far from being really practical.

I would even argue that "editing" on a Laptop is one of them. Their screens are too small, their keyboards suck, you can't get enough internal storage, price/performance is inferior, etc.

While it is possible, the experience is sufficiently unpleasant that the prospect is beyond consideration.

You need a workstation to do this job, regardless of media.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
