Smart Bins for Offline Media

PostSun Aug 04, 2019 10:17 am

Any ideas for showing a smart bin for offline media? I can't find a tag of any sort relating to the media being available or not.

Go to the Edit Index and in the filter (available via the "..." ellipsis to the right of the magnifying glass icon) choose "Show Offline Clips"

Not the same as a smart bin, of course, but at least you can very quickly see a list of offline clips.

Great idea, but I can't make it work. The edit index shows nothing when selecting that option. Is there a hidden option in preferences that makes this work?

Probably because you don't have any offline media?

Oops, edited to add: I just tried this on a timeline where all my clips were offline (I've deleted them) and you're right, nothing shows up. Hmmm...I'm pretty sure this used to work but it's not working now in beta version of 16.

Yea this method definitely used to work for me as well.
Haven’t tried it for months though.

That's odd, as on my setup R15 AND R16 the Edit index will not show offline media clips and never did!
Perhaps someone knows how to make this work?

Weird!
Now I get the same results as you.
The filter is there but it doesn’t show any clips in the bin.

I am sure this used to work. Maybe it was a very old version.

i think that filter is just for the clips in the timeline, not the bins.

According to Peter Chamberlain in the thread linked below (from 2016): "The edit index offline indication is used when you import an EDL/XML/AAF that directs to a clip thats not in the media pool even if its in the list. We will look into that description and also 'offline' indications in general."

Of course, you can see offline clips in your timeline at a glance by looking at the timeline since there's a huge "media offline" sign on offline clips, but if you have a long timeline it can be useful to see a list at a glance (and you can export the list if you need to hand it to someone to hunt them down).

Maybe the OP was asking for smart bins that would identify any media that are offline regardless of whether they're already in your timeline or not.

Very much about what is offline in the project. Not necessarily a specific timeline, or perhaps multiple timelines.

I figured it out (not that it matters to your project years later), but for future colorists looking to solve this issue, I figured out a work around that works the same as OP had intended:

On your Smart Filter, use MediaPool Properties > File Path > matches none > whatever Volume number the rest of your footage is located (external drive or server mount)

In this case, I have an external drive mounted to drive F:, so I filtered everything in this edit that is not in drive F: which is everything that is offline. Now it shows me all of the clips that are offline in the edit, which totals to 300+ (YIKES!).

This was a feature that I needed to work to give a quote on a massive reconforming project of 2000+ clips. After reconforming to the bin of source camera footage, there was still hundreds of clips that were incorrect.

I was just looking into this for an issue of Cut/daily I'm writing

in DR 17.2.1 you can create a smart bin search for offline media with:

MediaPool Properties > Status > is > Offline

I think this should work for what the OP intended?

This is a feature that I have been looking for years. I would also love it if the filter menu is organized alphabetically, which it is currently not (look at the attached image)

The fact that it’s not Alphabetical drives me crazy. How silly is it
