Move any displays from the onboard Intel HD4600 graphics GPU to the NVIDIA GTX1070 card.

Re: No Video Playback/Preview in Resolve 16 (Free Version)

PostThu Sep 24, 2020 8:26 pm

hi ,I'm unable to play/preview video clips on my timeline in Resolve 16. I am using a Arch Linux kernel 5.8.10.a-1-hardened intel i7-4800MQ Nvidia Quadro K1100M in a laptop hp zbook 15.

Both the preview windows appear GREY.

Help please!

We only support Resolve on RHEL/CentOS 7.x

It looks like your system is initializing the GPU in CUDA mode properly, and I don't see any complaints in the logs that would indicate why the preview screens would be grey. That can happen if you are using an unsupported NVIDIA GPU in OpenCL mode. But in all your logs, except one, you are in CUDA mode.

One thing I can say for sure is don't update Resolve past 16.2.6, or your Quadro K1100M definitely won't work in CUDA mode. Resolve 16.2.7 and up use CUDA 11, and your GPU is not supported in that version.

My final suggestion is to check in the thread relating to using Resolve on unsupported distro's. Someone there may have suggestions:

I also have issues with my playback. Resolve was all working fine until I updated it to 16.2.7 (from a quite recent version although I'm not 100% sure it was 16.2.6 but I suspect so). During my investigation of the issue, I also updated my NVIDIA driver to the latest "Studio" version, enabled my intel graphics from the BIOS (although I don't use it at all) and updated the corresponding driver.

I do have playbacks working in Resolve's Cut and Edit pages when I first open my project.
When I go to the Fusion page to edit/view a special effect I tried to make, neither of the left nor right previews are not shown.
Afterward, going back to the Cut or Edit pages, the preview shows a still image of the video and won't ever change anymore, no matter where I place the time marker.

This can be repeated at will by restarting Resolve.

Any clue how I can solve the issue and resume my editing?

Assuming this is a desktop PC (can't tell for sure from the French NFO, but I don't think it's a laptop):

Move the display from the onboard graphics connector, to the GTX1060 card.

We want nothing connected to the onboard Intel graphics. Any displays need to be connected to the GTX1060 card.

You are right, it is a Desktop PC. The cable is connected on the graphics card, not on the onboard intel graphics (you told that to so many people, I wouldn't have made that mistake! ;) ). In fact, the issue appeared while the onboard graphics was disabled by the BIOS (to the benefit of the NVIDIA card).

I didn't realize Windows would output an NFO file in French. I re-generated the NFO file in English to ease the diagnostic.

Now there is nothing on the onboard graphics, but on the first NFO you sent, there were UHD displays on both the Intel (onboard) and NVIDIA graphics adapters.

If you turn off Hyper-V, does that help?

Is your Windows Power Plan set to High Performance? If not, can you try that and see what that does?

Turning Hyper-V did not help. High performance neither.

I'd like to reiterate that I have this issue only with a single of my projects (issue not present when I open previous projects I made in the past). Also, in the project where the issue occurs, I have the issue only from the moment I open a specific fusion clip.

Can you provide a Project Export .drp of that project, along with details like what timeline and clip you are opening that starts the problem?

Of course!

There is a single timeline, a single clip and a single fusion clip. When I open the fusion clip, preview screens are not working anymore.

If you are running Resolve 16.2.7 on a Linux system with an NVIDIA card, you need to use NVIDIA driver 450.66 or higher.

You are using 440.100, and because of that, Resolve is running the GPU in OpenCL mode, which is not desired and is known to cause issues the Playback/Preview windows.

Either update the driver or revert to Resolve 16.2.6.

I updated drivers nd BIOS and it worked for a couple days. Now it's back to looking like the screenshot below. Video won't show up in trimmer or main window.

In the Resolve Help menu, select "Create Diagnostics Log on Desktop"

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

You need to update the NVIDIA driver for your GTX 1660Ti GPU.

You currently have 451.67. It needs to be a minimum of 451.82. I'd recommend trying the 452.06 Studio driver.

Still doing it. It opened and functioned about four times and then on the fifth it, once again, doesn't show any playback in any playback window.

Right. What Charles said.

You currently have a display connected to the onboard graphics connector.

Any displays HAVE to be connected to the GTX 1660 Ti. NOTHING connected to the onboard graphics.

Right you are. In that case, I would direct you to this post, to try the various things suggested there:

You will need to copy and paste the above URL to your browser. It won't work from this message.

In particular, use the NVIDIA Control Panel (at the 2:20 point of the video) to select the GTX1660Ti as the preferred processor.

No, I was saying "right you are" to your comment that its a laptop.

It should be able to run Resolve.

My last suggestion is to remove the Intel iGPU driver with DDU, per the process in the thread linked below:

Again, not being computer guy, can this be at all detrimental to the machine? I actually downloaded Resolve 15 and it's been running smoothly. I don't plan on doing any 4K work or anything beyond basic color and titles. Would it be problematic to keep using 15? Thanks again, Dwaine, I really do appreciate all the time and effort.

Well, you are only changing details of the system, the hardware will not be affected.
But then, if 15 works well for you and you don't miss features from 16, why not stay with it?
HD vs 4K is not the question here, that depends on your hardware. 15 can handle both resolutions.

Does windows handle the preferred processor now? I seem to remember that it moved into windows under Settings>Display>Graphics settings>Graphics Performance Preference. Is that just windows 10 2004?

You appear to have displays connected to both the onboard graphics port and the GTX1050 card.

All the displays need to be connected to the GTX1050 card.

So either remove the display that's connected to the onboard graphics port, or move it to the GTX1050 card.

Hi,

I am having a similar problem. I can't preview or play any videos. The audio appears to be there, but nothing displays. I have tried different file formats (MP4, MKV, MOV and JPG) but nothing is displaying in the preview pane or the timeline pane in either Cut or Edit pages. This seems to have happened since I update from 16.2.5 to 16.2.7, but there were some Windows updates at a similar time.

Attached is the screenshot of what I see in Davinci Resolve.

Here is the link to the .NFO file and Resolve Log. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

I'm using a laptop with integrated GPU, attached to a second monitor via a USB hub. I have tried updating Display adaptor drivers, but that doesn't work.

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

I don't see any issue in the logs with your graphics setup.

However, it is complaining about that file. So in this case, it seems to be a file issue.

If you add a Color Bar Generator to your timeline on the Edit page, and make it a compound clip, does that work?

Hello.
I'm using the Studio version.
I've just started using Resolve last week.
The playback was fine initially until a few hours ago.
Anyway, here are the log and nfo files.
Please assist.
Thank you.

Hi Dwaine,

The issue occurs with all files, not just the one I shared previously, as can be seen on the screenshot of the Media Library, where no preview thumbnails are displayed and there is nothing in the Preview pane.

I tried adding a colour bar, but that didn't render either.

I then created a composite clip of the colour bar and a clip, still to no avail.
