To anyone else I haven't responded to:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

Hi, I'm unable to play/preview video clips in Resolve 16.

I tried to install the NVIDIA 431.86 Studio driver, but got errors.
My laptop said it required DCH driver package.
I have used DCH driver, but still cannot install Studio driver successfully.

The link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Thanks.

I like the video Dale recommends a lot.

Anyone with a desktop or laptop system that has both Intel integrated and NVIDIA graphics that is having issues with installing and running Resolve should watch this and follow the suggestions.

Here is a direct link:

Embedding the link into this message is not working. So just copy the link and paste it into your browser.

The only thing I would disagree with is in the NVIDIA driver download area, where he shows there are both Studio and Game Ready drivers available, he recommends using the Game Ready driver. If you have a GPU that shows Studio Drivers are available (not all NVIDIA GPU's have Studio drivers) then I would recommend you use the Studio driver.

@April: You have the current 451.77 driver installed. That should be OK.

I would suggest you watch the video, and follow the suggestions about using the NVIDIA Control panel to make the NVIDIA GPU the preferred graphics processor. Video shows this starting at the 2:40 mark.

If that doesn't help, at 4:08, the video describes checking the BIOS settings to make sure the NVIDIA GPU is selected. Try that as well, if the NVIDIA Control Panel preferred GPU setting doesn't help.

I've created a separate post for my issue but I can confirm that it exists on the Studio version of DaVinci Resolve too.
I'm having a huge trouble getting anything done when I can't see what I'm doing. Good news is, everything else seems to be working so if someone can help me get Resolve to playback the video I'll be all set.

As this is a Studio issue, I've created a dedicated topic here:
https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=118848&p=653625#p653625

I've attached my log archive

We only support Resolve Linux on CentOS 7.x. And highly recommend using NVIDIA GPUs on Linux.

That's not to say other distro's and AMD GPU's can't be made to work, it just seems to be a major challenge for people to make those work.

The following thread has people using unsupported distro's, including Ubuntu. Have a look through there and/or post your question there. Details on your hardware and GPU would be helpful if you post:

Hello All, I have the same problem. Black playback today, timeline thumbnail is visible. I have been reading through the posts and done all the updates I saw mentioned. And yes lost now. We are in stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne and I can't go to the studio hence hotspotting from my phone sitting in the freezing garage. I might well have missed a trick in these weird circumstances but not a huge expert on PC either.

Windows 10 (home)
DAvinci 16.2.5015
GTX 1080 Ti-Cuda (I tried these 2 updates GeForce v3.20.414 and 431.36-desktop-win-64bit international)
This is the link to the DAvinci log
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bZAAC3 ... sp=sharing

If you could please tell me where I am going wrong that'd be awesome. Many thanks, Elke

And if it only has a Resolve log, we also need a Windows System Information .NFO file.

Dwaine, I seem to be having the same issues as everyone else. Curently running an intel i7 core, 16GB ram, a 64 bit operating system, and a nvidia geforce gtx 1050. I'm going through all the trouble shooting solutions you've listed, updated the nvidia driver, and currently working on changing my monitor to the nvida port. Please let me know if there's anything else I should try, or if I need to upload any other files.

@Scot: Can't tell for sure without an NFO, but the log looks like moving your display to the NVIDIA card should solve your issue.

@Elke: This appears to be your issue as well. You currently have your display connected to the onboard graphics connector. Connect your display to the NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti card instead.

Yes, the display, monitor, screen or whatever you call the thing that you see the computer GUI on, which has a cable that connects to the computer graphics port. Move that cable to the add in NVIDIA card graphics port.

We need a System Information .NFO file as well.

From the logs, my guess without the NFO, is that you have a display connected to the onboard graphics, and not to the NVIDIA GTX 1060 card.

If so, any and all displays need to be connected to the GTX 1060 card. No displays connected to the onboard graphics ports.

My response above was aimed at Prince. I must not have seen Adeitya's post when I responded.

But as it turns out, it's a similar issue. There is a conflict between the integrated AMD Vega graphics and the NVIDIA GTX 1050 GPU in the laptop. Since it's a laptop, my guidance above about moving the display to the NVIDIA card is not helpful.

Have a look at this video. It describes how to ensure that the NVIDIA processor is the one used by Resolve. This video is describing selecting between Intel integrated graphics and the NVIDIA GPU, but the concepts are the same for your AMD Vega integrated graphics:

@Dwaine Maggart I switched the monitor to the Nvidia card, and was able to get playback, but everything is much more choppy, way worse than it was with 15. Here is that .NFO file. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TxGa0D ... sp=sharing

Strangely, the NFO does not show the Intel HD4600 graphics that Resolve is detecting.

Please send another Resolve log, now that you've moved the display.

You might also have a look through this video, to ensure you have the NVIDIA control panel settings optimized:

Dwaine, here is the new resolve log. I watched the video, and while I can access the navida control panel, I don't seem to have the ability to choose a preferred graphics processor. I'm currently looking into a solution for that.

This is the issue of posting in a 5 page long thread with dozens of users. You might get lost in the shuffle.

You only provided an NFO and no Resolve logs. But based on your laptop graphics configuration, have a look through this video and do the suggested things there:

You didn't provide a Windows System Information .NFO file, so I can't give you a more detailed answer.

But if you have a desktop PC, and you have a display or displays connected to the onboard graphics port, make sure all displays are connected to the NVIDIA GTX 1650 card.

If that's not the issue, then send the NFO file.

Firstly, @Dwaine Maggart, you are a legend! Seems like you have helped a tonne of people and I am hoping you can do the same for me.

I am experiencing the same issue as many others. I have imported video files into Resolve 16 and I can see thumbnails but no preview. I have tried multiple filetypes (MP4, MKV, MOV, etc) and no difference. I am able to see previews of fusion compositions I am working on in Fusion but not on the timeline. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

The system is a pre-built Dell Workstation with an onboard Intel UHD 630 graphics card so I was unable to follow some of the other advice you have given. Link below for Resolve Logs and .NFO file:

In addition to the onboard Intel UHD630 graphics (to which your display is currently connected) you also have an NVIDIA P1000 card. You need to move the display(s) to the P1000 card.

Hello. I am having a problem in Da Vinci Resolve 16, where the left preview window plays no video of the selected video from the media pool on the edit tab. All other preview windows play video no problem in any other tabs, but when I'm in edit and click a video in media pool there is no video on the left preview window it is just black. When swipe my cursor over a video thumbnail in the media pool then I can see the stills in the left preview window but can't play the video.

I am on Win10 all updates done incl. latest BIOS of my MB (MSI B450 Gaming Plus)
My pc doesnt have integrated GPU, only a RTX2060 dedicated GPU and my monitor is connected via a DP cable directly to the RTX2060.

@Marcello: Can you describe exactly what your issue is? I don't see any indications in the logs that you are having an issue in the Viewer.

@Anil: You can hover scrub over a thumbnail in the Media Pool, and that appears in the left viewer. But when you double click that same file, to play it in the left viewer, what happens? The viewer goes black, or just just shows the last frame you hover scrubbed over?

In the viewer's 3 dot menu, does de-selecting Live Media Preview change anything?

In the viewer mode, in the lower left, that's set to Source?

Hi @Dwaine,
as you can see in the screenshots, i put a simple clip in timeline, when use some tools in fusion (planartracker in this case), no preview in edit windows. If I turn off fusion, the the preview appears. Same behavior in color window. I'm going crazy. The strange thing is that if I open a saved project where fusion was used, all works fine. If in the same project I try to apply some fusion tools, the clip where fusion tools was used don't show the preview.

Thx

Now that I have the project name, I'm able to take a closer look through the logs. There are some GPU Exception errors that likely are related to the display going black.

Can you provide a project export .drp of the tramonto project?

Thank you Dwaine,
for more complete information, if I open old projects (created with the free version), there are no problems. The problem occurred after the last update of the studio version.
I disabled from bios the Intel video card (it is now enabled), without any change.

I'm probably wrong somewhere, but it seems strange to me that a new project (like "tramonto") where there is a video clip and a simple fusion tool can create these kinds of problems.

Not being an expert Fusion user, I needed some assistance myself to figure out what was going on with your comp.

When you have a MediaOut node on the Fusion page, it starts with MediaOut1. And by default, that feeds the Edit/Color processing path.

Additional MediaOut nodes are intended for use with mattes on the Color page. Each additional MediaOut number feeds the corresponding Source input on the Color page node tree.

If you right click in the Color page node tree area, and select "Add Source", you'll see additional node tree source's appear on the left. In your case, if you add 2 more sources, and hover the mouse over each source, you'll see the hover text tell you what's feeding that source. Source 1 and 2 will say "No Fusion Output". Source 3 will say MediaOut3. So to solve your issue, connect the node in the node tree to source 3, instead of 1.

Or, on the Fusion page, if you select the MediaOut3 node, you'll see it has an Index value of 2. If you change that Index value to 0, that will make your comp output appear on the first source on the Color Page node tree.

I'm not sure from a "proper Fusion practice" perspective which is the better approach, but either should solve your issue.

Edit: It appears the best practices way would be to rename the node to MediaOut1, and set the Index from 2 back to 0.

I assume you have a MediaOut3 node, because you were messing with MediaOut nodes earlier, and deleted MediaOut1 and 2.

Sir,
I am unable to play/preview video clips on my timeline in my Resolve 16, only I can hear audio while pressing the play buttons.

I need some help.
I have attached screenshot of my Resolve screen.

If this is a desktop with a separate monitor, make sure it is connected to your graphics card and not the onboard graphics connector.

What Charles said. If that doesn't help, we need:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Thank you Dwaine, solved. As supposed it's my mistake ;)

Looks like others have had the same problem as I'm having. (I just wish I hadn't blown a tight deadline by assuming that Resolve, which has worked beautifully in the past, would continue to do so.)

Reposting because I forgot one link:
