FabFilter audio plugins crashing Resolve 15.3

PostWed Sep 04, 2019 5:03 am

Hey guys,

I grabbed the FabFilter essentials bundle recently which includes an equalizer, compressor and reverb. Was excited to use it only to find that it has been constantly crashing Resolve 15 for me. I tried both the VST 2.4 and 3.0 plugins, upgraded to the latest nVidia driver, and disabled graphics acceleration in the registry but still no luck. I'm running Windows 10 (build 17134.885).

When I disable the plugins I don't have any issues.

Anybody have any experience using their plugins with Resolve/Fairlight?

Posting a crash log may assist, along with a more detailed system spec: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190

FabFilter plugins do not cause Resolve 16.1 to crash with either VST2.4 or AU on macOS.

Is it safe to upgrade existing 15.3 projects into Resolve 16? I have quite a few timelines and I'm concerned about something breaking in the upgrade.

I'm on
Windows 10 (Build 17134.885)
64gb ram
GeForce 1070 (driver version 436.15)

Follow the guidance in the FAQ post, and backup your database: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190

“For users moving from v15 or earlier, using the Project Manager tools please back up your database, both DiskDB and PostgreSQL if you use them, export your drp's of your active projects and then restore the v15 DB before upgrading to v16 in preparation for the version upgrade as you can not go back to v15 with a v16 DB.”

Upgraded to Resolve 16.0 and am unfortunately still experiencing crashes. I've created brand new projects to test and those crash as well.

I've used the plugins with Adobe Audition and haven't experienced a crash yet so I'm guessing the issue is with Resolve.

I might be missing something simple, I installed all the VST 2.4 plugins inside a folder in Program Files. This is what my Audio Plugins page looks like:

Not sure if "Unable to read VR Path Registry" is what's causing the error or just part of the crash log dump. Should note that I don't have a C:\Users\Sergio\AppData\Local\openvr\ folder on my computer

Think I figured out what's causing this.

I upgraded to Resolve 16 and switched my nVidia drivers for my GeForce 1070 to the Studio Driver (version 431.86). Thought things were stable for a while until I noticed a pattern in what's triggering crashes:

Having a timeline open that has compound or nested timelines inside it. Specifically, it seems like this happens when you nest or compound a timeline that has a VST effect applied to it.

Right now I have one timeline called "Full" which nests/houses all the compound clips for all scenes. I did this so I could apply my audio effects per track rather than per clip. If I clicked between Full and the other timelines that didn't have compound clips inside them it was only a matter of minutes before Resolve crashed.

When I removed Full from my stacked timelines I was able to work inside Resolve for hours applying VST effects to multiple tracks with no issue.

I also created a brand new project, just to make sure it wasn't something lingering from using Resolve 15, and was able to duplicate the issue. Again, only a matter of minutes before Resolve crashed.

Compound clips seem to work as long as you don't have any audio effects applied to them.
