I used OpenFX Blanking Fill with jpg stills on Edit Page and first it worked correctly. But after adding subtitles or titles the filling lacked.

I tried OpenFX Blanking Fill instead on Color Page and it works with and without subtitles or titles as expected.

Tested in a new DR 16.1 Beta 2 UHD Project with jpg stills in portrait format 2268 x 4032.

Same problem. Even in 16.0

As a viewer, I would ask you both to just leave the black. Trying to fill the sides or top and bottom with image that doesn't belong is very distracting from what you actually want the viewer to see.

Would agree with you, Jim (from aesthetical point of view).
But it's a technical problem - in DR Edit page, compositing of OpenFX effects fails (both - plugins and Text+ are OpenFX).

But...it seems like a technical problem that can safely be ignored, if one prioritizes the aesthetics. No?

Not at all.
Sometimes I find it necessary to use "Blanking Fill", but it doesn't work as supposed.
If a tool is present, it should be functioning correctly.

I agree with that philosophy.

But, what I'm saying is that this tool should not be present, as the practice itself is an abomination.

Just leave the black. If it's not your call, talk the client into it. Make the aesthetic argument. Beg if you have to.

This is a practice that needs to stop. That only happens if folks are willing to speak out against it.

Still, it's a bug. And it relates not only to "Blanking Fill", but to any effect, that propagates beyond original boundaries (alpha channel) of source footage.

The same problem.

It is related to alpha processing issue in Resolve. You can make it work by wiring up an alpha output node in the color page - see previous posts.

Blanking Fill does not work during transitions on my setup.
