full screen on main display bug?

PostThu Oct 03, 2019 8:04 am

I have a 2 display system, but i do NOT want to use the second display as my fullscreen viewer.

1st Display is an imac pro.
The 2nd display is a 4k Dell, but despite everyone's long efforts, it appears to be impossible to calibrate it properly. I'm fine with this. It is therefore just some real estate beside my imac screen, which i dump my browser, email, itunes and whatever else into. I do want it connected, but not to be used for my resolve work at all.
I have chosen in sys prefs to make the Dell my 'primary display', as when i start up the computer i do all my emails and admin on this screen; it keeps everything tidy and out of the way of my resolve, on the imac display.

Right.
So for the most part, everything's great and working.
But when I toggle fullscreen if i want to playback in this mode (using command-f), the fullscreen video always goes to the second screen, no matter what settings in resolve i change.

I'm adjusting these settings:

workspace>primary display
workspace>dual screen (i don't want this)
workspace>full screen viewer on..
workspace>full screen

Is this a bug, or can anyone point out my error, or a way to troubleshoot please?

Did you try Reset UI Layout through Workspace menu?
Maybe this help.

Yep, thanks for the effort though.
I saved this til last as I don't like resetting stuff and losing any workspace changes i made, but i've tried it now and it doesn't fix the problem.
Still sending fullscreen mode to my Dell no matter what i try.

I did the following:
open Resolve.app
Ensure Workspace > Full Screen is toggled off
Drag the window to the Display 2
Toggle on full screen for my window (if my preference is that way)
Workspace > Full Screen viewer on > Display 1

so Display 1: full screen viewer, Display 2: DaVinci Resolve application window

Shrinivas, Can you tell me if it is possible to set the source viewer on full screen mode as well? at the same time as im playing back the timeline.

Thanks Shrinivas, but this solution is for if you want both displays being used by Resolve; a 2-display Resolve setup.

I only want to use my imac screen for Resolve. My Dell is useless for colour.
I basically want it to behave like a single monitor setup, as far as resolve is concerned, whilst keeping my other monitor connected for non-resolve use.

I want to quick toggle between full screen viewer and non full screen viewer, using a keyboard shortcut. Command F seems to be the shortcut in question. But when i do it, my resolve always sends the video to my Dell, rather than keeping the image on the imac.

Ok: I have further info that will probably help. In running tests, this seems to be related to my system preferences setting, whereby i designated my imac as 2nd display rather than 1st.

So mac's system settings have a '1st display/2nd display' , and Resolve also uses this language, '1st display / 2nd display' , but it doesn't necessarily correspond?

When i put Resolve's interface on the screen that my MAC refers to as 1st display, Command F works as expected. The MAC 2nd display is left unaffected. But when I put Resolve on the MAC 2nd display, Command F sends the fullscreen image to the other screen rather than keeping it on the same one.

It's some clarification to include in the Resolve code, if anyone cares, haha. In the meantime i'll try switching my sys preferences' 1st/2nd display.

Rick, the full screen viewer follows the viewer in focus on the edit page.

And unless I misunderstand your intention, this applies to ganged viewers too - you can play back the source and timeline viewers in ganged mode and still continue to monitor source while your focus is there.

If that's not what you want to do, can you explain what your scenario is?

Alex,

I'll have to verify this behavior but Cmd-F seems to default to the primary display determined by the OS. From some preliminary tests, going to system preferences and moving the menu bar back to your iMac display should switch around the Cmd-F behavior for you.

Regards
Shrinivas

Thanks Shrinivas,

It's a workable solution. I would rather have dell as primary display in sys prefs, but no worries

I'm working on a concert with a multicam timeline. basically i want exactly the same view as the source viewer in multicam mode (so with all the angles) but on a seperate, bigger monitor for the director next to me.

Following up on this issue.
Even with imac screen selected as primary display, it's buggy for me.

When i press command-F i get full screen on primary display (good!), but when i toggle it back to normal view by command-F again, the interface whizzes over to my second display (why?).

I then have to go workspace>full screen window (deselect), drag the window from 2nd display back into my primary display, then workspace>full screen window (select) before continuing. This only seems to happen the first time in the session. Thereafter, command-F toggles correctly and leaves everything on primary display.

Hi Shrinivas (or anyone else)
After all this time, i'm still looking around for a solution. How can i get this source viewer (in multicam mode) bigger, and on a seperate monitor, while editing? On the one hand i feel really stupid to ask this, since this must be possible somehow, and i understand you cannot answer every single question, but i just cannot find anything in the manual or anywhere else which explains how it should be done.

I made an illustration of what i mean:
