obj textures in fusion

PostSat May 25, 2024 12:58 am

I have some experience with fusion, but am new to 3d, especially importing .obj files. There are so many great pre designed 3d objects out there, but I can't see how to import them without having to manually redo all the texture mapping. Is there a format that allows me to import a somewhat complex 3d model i.e. a car, and have all the texture mapping import as well? thank you.

Haha, it's a gambling area there; I've posted a lot in those topic threads, and usually it leads to the Blender way to bake them before then importing in Fusion.
However, I've had lucky experiences with .abc alembic format to reach the goal you're describing (which is mine as well ;) ).
You can't imagine the wasted times in past projects of mine in putting a cookTorrance for relinking diffuse, normals with its own bumpMap, textures etc etc...

You've had success getting materials in via Alembic? That's never worked for me. FBX often does, though. I described a workflow a while back for getting textures via FBX onto an Alembic point cache. Yes, it requires two exports, but it works. I'm pretty sure it's on this forum somewhere.

Hi Bryan

Yes, I was glad to find a really nice asset with a maximum of 3-4 nodes (I'm not in front of it) in most of my projects where Alembic was chosen.

AFAIR, I tried the alembic way for example when I download a character for an ad making tutorial from Mixamo if I remember well (don't remember if one can choose the format there or if I chose an extra step but who cares)

Ok, I admit SOME of FBX assets were properly linked too when imported in Fu (unlike Alembic or OBJ, fbx almost always features every components visible in the Fu node flow), but as I wrote above, it's kind of a gambling situation where you're never sure it will do.
When or when not ? Well, it's probably bound to the way it had been rigged before I guess, but is it because I'm too lazy or because my job is to comp them in the end and not to make 3D assets, I cannot tell now, anyway I'd be sooo glad to find a really ******* solid WF to finally get any 3D asset completely rigged and textured in Fusion after import, no matter if I a couple of external app are involved...

Writing about that, yes, Blender looks like it might be a time saver but... what ? "I described a workflow a while back for getting textures via FBX onto an Alembic point cache" :o
Where the hell is that ? Please :D :ugeek:

Seems it was over at WSL, but I linked to it here once or twice. One more time :D
