My Fusion obstacle

PostMon Mar 24, 2025 8:06 pm

I'm very much a part timer and amateur. I have worked with some trainings and YouTube videos, but can't quite accomplish my goal. I have this simple composite of astronauts in capsule. I have moving star fields off to the sides in my timeline. The issue: I have video of faces I want to put into the helmets. So far, no success. I'm definitely a "plug away at it" person, but at this point would love some guidance. Does anyone have a fusion patch to solve this? Looking for answers! And thanks in advance for any pointers.

What is your set up in fusion? Are the "astronauts" moving or are they still? Do you already have a mask for the area where you want to put the faces?

The astronauts will be still except for the faces layer inside. The sad truth is that I worked on this last at least 6 months ago and have forgot most of what I had learned. I don't even think this fusion comp has a mask, though I have tried several versions. I do remember my main issue was getting the face video clips inside the helmets.

The fusion comp I'm sending is just the last attempt I tried and frankly may be very, very incomplete. I had more elaborate efforts previously that failed. Thanks for any attention you have to give.

If the images of the suits of the astronauts are static and you only need to put some videos inside the helmet which you can mask with either polygon tool or wand tool etc than its pretty simple process of using merge nodes to merge videos of the faces on top and use masks to mask them out so they fit inside the helmet. You can use transform tools to scale and position the videos where they need to be.

You can also use one multi merge node and add the two videos and use one or two combined masks as I've done here for illustration purpose. Since the images insides the helmets were just solid color I used wand tool (similar to magic wand in Photoshop) and I combined two wand tools to give me mask of the inside of the helmet and one multi-merge node to combine two videos and mask them. That's it.

Like I said you can use merge node per video or one multi merge node, same thing. You can use polygon or B.spline or any other tool to mask the inside of the helmet shape and apply the mask (blue input) to merge nodes or one multi merge node.

Thanks again KrunoSmithy. I also found this video very informative.
