Native Depth of Field

PostThu Apr 24, 2025 8:43 pm

Hi,

I know this has been asked before but I figured with the release of 20 it may be worth asking again. But does blackmagic intend on adding any kind of ZDefocus node natively?

I come from a nuke background so have grown very used to the ZDefocus node there which works really well. It gives accurate depth of field and handles edges between depths reasonably well. Right now it's basically the one thing stopping me from making a complete shift over to Fusion full time.

It would be great to hear if any plans were being made to natively support a (highly needed) node?

It's difficult to predict whether Blackmagic will develop a built-in tool that surpasses third-party alternatives. And if they are developing it, which they might be, its something they probably won't share with us in advance. However, given their unexpected introduction of a comprehensive deep pixel compositing toolset, it seems plausible that they will eventually add a dedicated depth blur tool to utilize it. The improvements to edge handling in Resolve's defocus background tool and the enhanced depth mask suggest they are exploring related technologies. Therefore, I am optimistic that a proper, and long-overdue depth blur tool will be released soon.

Currently, several third-party options exist. The native depth blur is quite basic and not particularly effective. Macro DepthDefocus attempts to handle edges and other elements more effectively. VariBlur, while not strictly a depth blur, can be useful in certain scenarios. Additionally, there are numerous third-party OpenFX plugins and Fuses. One is being developed by community members and appears promising. Among the other options, I currently use and am satisfied with Frischluft Depth of Field, which produces excellent bokeh and manages edges quite well compared to most alternatives I have tested. It still delivers the best, or one of the best, results of the available options, at least for now. However, I remain hopeful that Blackmagic will create a native deep pixel tool with proper depth of field simulation.
