convert photos into 3D

PostSat Jul 05, 2025 4:51 pm

I am currently using Photoshop and Aftereffects to convert still images to create a 3D volumetric image to animate for a subtle 3D effect. I then output these as a video clip and import into Resolve. This workflow is a pain but Fusion doesn't seem to do this. I suspect I need a 3rd Party key frame plugin to work. Can Resolve/Fusion do this as is or should I stick with my current workflow? If a keyframer plugin is required, can anyone suggest a good tool? I ask because there is not a way to control the Modify with Perturb tool - it renders a total random animation with no way to control the keyframe animation. AE on the other hand has real key frame controls. Hoping the next version of Resolve will include better key frame control.

I am Resolve 20.

Can you show example of what you mean? What is volumetric 3D image? Because you can do pretty much anything after effects can do a lot more in fusion. Unless you are talking about some third party AI plug in or something. I don't know how much you know or don't know about fusion. So I don't know if you are speaking from lack of knowlage or do you mean something you haven't explained correctly? Can you show visual example of what you mean and remove potential misunderstanding.

I use a still image, create a depth map and than use it as way to animate the original image to render a subtle 3D parallax and motion effect, i.e., volumetric. Or in another words, Ken Burns photo effect.

I think AE is used to create his 3D Photo effects. Not sure if Fusion is built for this.

Yeah. Fusion can do that. It shouldn't be a problem.

You have now built in depth map which is pretty good in resolve, and fusion or you can use third party one from free online sources. You can use displace 3D if you want to use depth map approach to extrude and than either project the image or use it as texture. Depending on the animation, they have their pros and cons. You can do a lot more than that in fusion 3D system but simple parallax, yes. it should be pretty simply if you know basics of fusion 3D system.

Your volumetric reference was confusing. its not Ken Burns effect either. Ken burns is just pan and zoom. And now we can do actual volumetric images or close to it using deep imaging system, but that is differnt topic.

I'll try to find some. Its not always easy to find the best tutorials for the feature, but here are some. Some are more of a demo of the way people use projections and 3D system and some are actual tutorials, so take a look, and some should be more relatable or useful to you than others. But since I don't know which and there is limited information on it, best to post it all and you can decide.

There's great course on Lowepost.com called Advanced Multiplaning in Davinci Resolve. It's not free but I would recommend it.
